Surprise, surprise. The Garmin-Asus Garminfone has dropped in price. Again. But this time, it appears to apply only to existing T-Mobile customers. Tmo has sent out emails to existing customers, informing them that they can now pick up a Garminfone for only $99 (with 2-year contract & $50 mail-in rebate), meaning they get an instant $30 discount. This may be a special promotion or a last ditch attempt to sell as many Garminfones as possible, but it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing this GPS-laden Android phone much longer.

This is somewhat startling, considering that we covered another price drop just 3 weeks ago. The navigation-savvy device is declining in popularity faster than expected. T-Mobile may not like it, but the Garminfone is going downhill. Fast.

The GenTouch 78 by Augen garnered an amazing amount of interest from the Android community when K-Mart revealed it in one of their circulars for a few days ago. The tablet debuted at $150 and had a good amount of you scrambling about to see if you could find one in your local K-Mart stores. Even with it not being the most capable tablet we’ve seen, the community’s excited about it and it clearly shows that demand for Android tablets is real and the market for them could explode any day now.

    Augen-GenTouch-78-CM6-02

Cyanogen and his team that never sleeps have shown an immense amount of interest, as well, as they’re bringing CM6 to the tablet (the first tablet to receive such an honor). Specifically, popular developer TheDude has been the one tinkering with the device for the past few days and has gotten the FroYo-laden CM6 running on it and is working on tweaking it for that nice 7-inch screen. Cyanogen’s humorous “tips” widget is shown between the search and music widgets, with the bottom-most row holding 8 icons horizontally (from the looks of things, the launcher is an 8 wide x 6 tall grid).

Be sure to follow TheDude on Twitter if his developments interest you and if you’re thinking of picking one of these up for yourself.

HTC Desire Z and Desire HD (Ace and Vision)

We’re still not entirely sure what’s planned for a couple of HTC codename-phones that have been floating around — the Ace and Vision, but damned if they haven’t appeared in an inventory system for Vodafone D2 in Germany as the Desire HD (a name we’ve heard before) and Desire Z, respectively. German blog BestBoyZ says the Desire HD should be similar to the aluminum unibody design of the HTC Legend (read our full review of that one), and have features of of the HD2 and Desire (whatever that means).

Now, any release here in the U.S. is likely to come under some other name, but it looks like these phones may be closer to breaking their cover. Oh, and do note the addition of the original Desire with its new SLCD screen listed. [BestBoyZ via Google Translate] Thanks, Patrick!

    Samsung Galaxy Tab

Rumored Tablet next to a Galaxy S Phone

Speaking with Reuters, Samsung confirmed that they plan to release an Android based Tablet PC in Q3 this year. This places Samsung firmly in competition with LG, Acer, Dell, Toshiba and others that have announced Android based tablets. Samsung is the number 2 handset manufacturer worldwide second only to Nokia (who is struggling to gain a foothold in the smartphone market in the US). Though not many details are known regading the Samsung tablet device it is said to have a 7″ Super AMOLED screen according to Samsung. The device is also rumored to sport a 1.2Ghz CPU in the Hummingbird family (the same family used in Samsung’s Galaxy S phone series), Carry 16GB on internal storage with a microSDHC slot for external storage, A 4000 mHa battery and run Android 2.2.

    Motorola Droid X

Motorola has updated its, erm, update chart, and we’ve got two changes. Unsurprisingly after yesterday’s announcement, the original Droid has been changed to "Upgrade to Android 2.2 expected to begin the week of August 2." And the Droid X now has "Upgrade to Android 2.2 expected in late summer." There’s a whole bunch of Android 2.1 listed for Moto’s other phones, but Froyo’s all anybody’s interested in now, right? The popular social networking app, SCVNGR, has begun offering some real rewards for checking in.  Marketwire.com gives us a great synopsis of how both venues and customers can benefit from using SCVNGR every time we go out.
    To quote marketwire:

Today, we’re launching a new feature on SCVNGR. It’s a game element called the reward. And it’s a thing (like free coffee, half off a sandwich, a discount on dry cleaning or two-for-one ice cream sundaes) that you unlock from your favorite businesses, or reward to your happy customers, by earning enough points.

The national rollout is going to start out in ten major cities over the next two months, and then will escalate to other cities.  Certain venues like Journeys has already started offering rewards in their 800+ locations.

You may remember earlier in July, we here at Androidguys did a review on SCVNGR.  The trend seems to be catching on.  We’re not saying you have to stop using GoWalla or Foursquare (We did a review on that one, too!) but we are saying that you can rake in some serious prizes by using this free app.

What do you guys think?  Are you already using this app?  Have you done the social check ins and played the challenges with your friends?  Let us know how it’s working out for you!

    droid-froyo

We heard rumors earlier in the week that Verizon’s high-end Android phones could all expect to see Android 2.2 next week. With a leak of Froyo for the HTC Droid Incredible and a Sense-enabled Android 2.2 being sent to the EVO 4G soon, it seems likely that this rumor could stick. Confirming at least part of the claims is a report over at Engadget where they received word from Verizon that the original Motorola Droid would be getting the updated firmware sometime in the next week. The hasty announcement is no doubt spurred on by the “competitive” release of Froyo for the EVO, the first handset to get an official update to 2.2 other than Google’s own Nexus One. Good news for owners of the original Droid who just can’t pull the trigger on the Droid X or upcoming Droid 2, as it should breathe some life back into the device that is currently on its way out at Verizon.
