epicteardown

Literally. Now that all are free to get their hands on the Samsung Epic 4G, the FCC has decided it would rather get their hands in it. While this strip-down is more utilitarian than the type we normally see from iFixIt (who no doubt will have a go at the Epic as well), the guts of the phone are laid out in all of their gory glory.

epicteardown2

Yeah, it really won’t give you too much insight into the Epic 4G unless you are a technical geek who marvels at the intricate way parts are assembled, but its neat to look at nonetheless. All that power packed into a tiny device. Hit up the source link for more images.

LG-Optimus-PAD-550x365

Hold on a second. If LG takes a page from Motorola and Verizon’s book, there is a good chance we could be seeing an Optimus Prime Pad a la the R2-Droid2. Why, you might ask? Because LG has unveiled that their upcoming Android tablet will be known as the LG Optimus Pad. OK, the Optimus name isn’t exactly new when associated with LG’s Android offerings. In fact, it seems to be the name they have chosen to use as branding on devices with Google’s OS (similar to the Galaxy line from Samsung). But depending on the region of release for a particular Optimus handset, the branding is known to get dropped.

Anyway, I digress. Other than the name, LG is promising a tablet offering “superior performance” while being “thinner and lighter” than the competition. But for now we will just attribute those statements to marketing hype. We need hard specs, damnit! The Optimus Pad should fall right in with the upcoming group of tablets including Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Motorola’s offering, but given the way their handsets have stacked up against competing devices, we will hold reservations as to whether or not LG can offer a fulfilling tablet experience.

Samsung’s got another one of their “experience” events coming up in the middle of the month, and this time we know Android will be on hand. We know they’re about to unveil the Samsung Galaxy Tab in a couple of days at IFA in Berlin, so what other new device could it be? For starters, we could just be seeing the Samsung Galaxy Tab again. It’ll still be new to those of us here in America not keen on traveling to Germany, and it will still technically be new to everyone as the device isn’t out yet. They claim to be showing their latest device alongside the new Samsung Media Hub, but that’s all we could extract from our invitation.

What are you guys hoping to see at the event?

CPS-official-G2

In case the early shots of the T-Mobile G2 didn’t paint quite a clear enough picture of the upcoming HSPA+ handset, the official take has now leaked providing a bit more detail. Next to the EPIC 4G, the G2 is looking like the way to go if you fancy a full QWERTY keyboard in your future. From everything we have heard the specs don’t quite span into the next generation of rumored dual-core processors — the G2 will remain firmly planted at 1GHz. And if rumors turn out to be true, this one is most likely headed to your twitchy little hands come September 29th.

The DroidLanding twitter account may have died down following their national scavenger hunt campaign that had many scrambling about for a free Motorola Droid X, but the account has finally tweeted again. We know they’ve refocused the account for the R2D2 Edition of the Motorola Droid 2, but we still don’t know their exact plans for it.

r2d2

The bio on the account reads:

The Droid R2-D2 schematics are scattered across the web. Standby for clues from Artoo. Join the search.

The latest tweet links to this sound byte which sounds a lot like our robot friend from the Star Wars movies and uses the hashtag #AttackPatternAlpha. From the sounds of it, we could have another DROID search on our hands! We’ll keep our eyes on the account for further developments.

Motorola’s sending out a stern warning saying that anyone on a known, unofficial build of Android 2.2 for the Droid X will not be upgraded to the official upgrade set to come out early September. Motorola’s Matt states that you can revert back to the official Android 2.1 build if you want (though I’m not familiar with the device so I don’t know if that’s possible) to be able to receive the official upgrade soon. If you only deal with custom ROMs anyway then the warning doesn’t apply to you, but I know there are a lot of you out there that like to coast on unofficial builds until the official one begins rolling out. For you guys, you should probably be researching now on how to revert back to the Droid X’s stock Eclair build as “early September” officially begins tomorrow and expires on the 15th.

Prism 3D

Prism 3D is a great game that uses your Android phone’s accelerometer to track a beach ball as it bounces down a set of 3D tiles, and your goal is to keep it from falling by the wayside.  It’s way harder than it sounds, which to me is a big plus as it keeps the replay value high.  The game has beautiful graphics, is incredibly smooth on my Nexus One (I can only imagine it on a Galaxy S or Droid X), and entertaining as all get-out.  Add in an infinite mode for you guys who are good at this one, and a level editor for those of us who aren’t, and I think you have a real winner here.

After the break there’s a video of the game in action, and the download link, check this one out! [Hyperbees] Thanks Nicole!

The Droid Incredible by HTC is, well — nothing short of incredible (sorry, I just had to). What’s not incredible is the meager battery life, with the stock 1300mAh power plant. That’s where the 2150 mAh extended battery for the Droid Incredible comes in, getting you through the day — and then some. Full review and pictures after the break.

Hannspree tablet

Expect Android tablet news to flow like water as IFA 2010 gets into gear, so let’s start things off with a bang.  According to German site Areamobile.de, Chinese manufacturer Hannspree will be introducing a nice, high spec piece of kit that sets a very high bar for others to follow:

  • 10.1 inch 1024×600 display
  • 14 mm thick
  • 1 GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 system on chip
  • 16 GB internal memory
  • HDMI output @ 1080p
  • Accelerometer and ambient light sensor
  • Wifi and Bluetooth
  • Android 2.2

Pick your chin up, and keep an eye out for more news about this one and more from IFA 2010, Dieter’s there on the ground, and as long as there’s not a beer tent he’ll keep us informed. [Areamobile.de] Thanks GaMMeLHaNsy!

Milestone 2

If you’ve been waiting for the GSM version of the Droid 2, you’re in luck — Motorola has shown off the Milestone 2 in two minutes of video.  With the same sliding keyboard, same camera with dual LED flash, same 1 GHz processor, same as we’re used to from the original Droid / Milestone team.

With one big difference — apparently if you change the colors of the launcher, not-blur becomes Blur, and Moto isn’t afraid to call it such this time around.  We like the resizable widgets, and other cool things the Motorola home offers, so we won’t complain too much.  Be sure to check out the video after the break.  Thanks Albert!

Update: Annnnnnd … It’s gone. Guess it was more of us showing it off than them. :p
