HTC announced on Facebook today that they are testing an Android 2.3 build for the HTC Desire. As some of you may recall the scare from a few weeks back when the handset maker indicated that a Gingerbread would not be possible. However a short time later, HTC backtracked and said that they would need to remove parts of their Sense UI in order to get it to fit. It’s good to see the company working this fast to roll out the 2.3 release for the Desire and we hope to see a full-scale deployment in short order.

Nielsen has found that more than half of all U.S. consumers who purchased a cell phone in the last month bought themselves a smart phone. At 55-percent, this is up considerably from last year’s 34-percent and could be the first signs of a tipping point for smart phone adoption. Considering so many carriers offer free or low-cost Android devices, it’s hard to justify not buying one. Overall, smart phones now account for 38 percent of all cell phones in the United States.
Breaking down the smart phone field, Android continues to lead all platforms with a 38-percent share. Apple trails at 27-percent while RIM has dipped a few points to 21-percent. Rounding out the other players are Windows Mobile (9%), HP Web OS (2%), Symbian (2%), Windows Phone 7 (1%), and Palm OS (1%).
Looking at the last three months, Android’s shares have been generally flat while iOS has lead smart phone growth. Could this have been a result of the Verizon iPhone or has Android leveled off? Have we already seen the glory days of Android?

OfficeMax aims to make my life a tad bit easier thanks to their newly released Print Center app. With OfficeMax Print Center, I can upload, customize and schedule just about any document or image to be printed and picked up at any of OfficeMax’s 900+ ImPress® Print Centers. I all too often find myself having to drive back to the office to print a document, all while passing dozens of OfficeMax stores and wondering, “if only I could…” Seriously though, I’m not exaggerating, I find myself in this situation at least once a week.
The OfficeMax Print Center app is a full-service mobile printing app unlike “photo only” printing apps such as the Kodak Pic Flick App I can add documents from my phone, my email, and even Google Docs. I can create a document library, view my job history, and easily locate a store all from within the app. Customizing prints is a breeze with options to change paper size, type, color and more. Once submitted I can keep up with the status of my print jobs by opting to receive mobile text messaging alerts. I’d really prefer an in-dash wireless printer installed in my car but until that day, OfficeMax Print Center to the rescue!

We broke this story not too long ago when a tipster sent us some pictures of his SPH-D600 on Sprint. We didn’t have an actual name to go on but it looks like that has changed with Samsung’s newest unveiling of the Conquer 4G for Sprint.
While I wouldn’t call the device a low-end phone, it does manage to hang somewhere in between mid-level and high-end. Lets start with some of the specs. The phone features a smaller 3.5-inch HVGA display, 3.2MP rear facing camera with a 1.3MP front facing camera, Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Sprint ID, and a 1GHz processor. Oh, and as the name suggests, its compatible with Sprint’s 4G network (where available).
Not to shabby for a budget friendly device. I feel like these specs here she be considered the minimum when shooting for a low to mid-level device. The speedy processor should be able to handle the low res display and Android 2.3 quite nicely. The only thing we’re waiting on now is pricing and launch date. Stay tuned for more.

Samsung and Sprint have teamed up for another Android offering, the Conquer 4G, but it’s hard to tell whether or not they want you to know about it. At least not yet. PhoneScoop found the details on Samsung’s website yesterday however the page has since been pulled. Fortunately, the specs and a few pictures were collected before getting unpublished.
The D600 Conquer 4G looks to be a low-cost entry into Sprint’s 4G-ready handsets with specs that would have seriously impressed the most die-hard Android fan one year ago. Today however, those buying their first smart phones will be getting a 1GHz processor, 3.5-inch display, 3.2-megapixel camera, and front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera.
The Conquer 4G will offer support for not only Sprint’s 4G network but it will also feature support for their Sprint ID packs. These bundled apps, themes, and widgets help new users tailor their Android experience around specific needs and demographics.
We’re still waiting on price and availability for the Conquer 4G as neither Sprint nor Samsung appear to have issued a press release for the phone just yet. Looking at the image of the device, one might assume July 15th for release, but that’s just a wild guess.
