Orange have outed a forthcoming Android handset, the Acer C6 Liquid Express that is believed to be the Acer E320. Although it runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it comes with a lacklustre processor at just 800 MHz, which with todays dual core 1.5 GHz processors means its being pushed more towards the low end market. Other specs include a 5 MP rear camera, 3.5 inch LCD capacitive screen, a 3.5mm headset jack, WiFi and 3G. The handset will be available for free on selected tariffs, possibly later this month. Let us know what you think of the handset in the comments below.

We got an early look at the Pantech Breakout last week, when it leaked along with the Samsung Illusion. The Breakout’s spec sheet and user manual have also been leaked, and the numbers line up with what we’ve heard so far:

  • 1GHz single core processor
  • LTE radio
  • 4-inch WVGA display
  • Rear 5MP camera
  • Front-facing camera
  • Android 2.3
  • DLNA support

From the screenshots above, we can also see that Pantech is working on their own UI for Android devices. Hopefully it won’t be too heavy, and will allow for future updates to said devices. The Breakout is rumored to be launching next Thursday, September 22nd. No word from Big Red on an official release date, or if the device will even make it to retail shelves. More on this as it develops. If you’re interested the general layout of the device, you can download the user manual below.

So what do you think? Are mid-range devices like the Breakout helping or hurting Android as a whole? Be sure to drop a comment below!

Everyone loves a good sweepstakes every now and then, right? Big Red has teamed up with GoDaddy to bring one fan the chance to split $5 million with IndyCar racer, Dan Wheldon. All that’s required is for you to download the IndyCar Mobile App from the Android Market, and enter through the app. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “What’s the catch?” Well, for the contest to even take place, Dan Wheldon first has to take the checkered flag at the IZOD IndyCar Series season finale in Las Vegas on October 16th. That’s where the tricky part comes in. Wheldon will be starting the race at the very back, in last place. He’ll have 200 laps to make it to first place, earning both him and a randomly chosen contestant $2.5 million each. Wheldon and the winner will pick up their checks in Victory Circle.

But wait, there’s more! One other lucky fan will be chosen, and he or she will win airfare, hotel, and VIP access on and off the track at the IZOD IndyCar World Championships, along with a Verizon LTE phone and tablet, and “more totaling over $10,000.”

You can download the IndyCar Mobile App by using the box below. So with all that being said, who’s entering this contest? Do you think Wheldon can pull off a victory in Las Vegas? Be sure to leave a comment below!

No, you’re not having a flashback to 2005. Rumor has it that Motorola is working to bring back one of the most popular phones of its time, the RAZR. Obviously it was phased out by newer devices with different operating systems, so they’d have to make a few changes. The photo above was supposedly taken with the Motorola Slimline, a device that was leaked during that Moto site redesign a few months ago. As you can tell, the photo isn’t exactly HD quality, so it’s possible that this whole thing is a farce. The RAZR was known for its slim profile, which leads us to believe that Moto could be working on a thin Android device, hence the Slimline name.

Motorola may also rebrand the device as the Droid RAZR, which obviously puts it on Verizon’s network. Now, we haven’t heard any more about the Slimline, and as mentioned, the photo may have been fabricated along with this whole story. For now, we advise you to take this with a grain of salt until more information is uncovered.

So if the rumors are true, what do you think about Motorola’s attempt to bring back the RAZR? Would you buy the Slimline? Sound off in the comments below!

Sony Ericsson recently introduced the world to the Xperia Ray, a mid-range device with some good specs. Now the UK’s largest carrier, Vodafone UK, has officially launched the Xperia Ray. Vodafone is offering the Xperia Ray for free on a 2-yr contract, starting at £26 per-month. The device also comes with Sony Ericsson’s custom Timescape UI, which could be a blessing or a curse, depending on how you look at it.

Samsung recently announced their U.S. variants of the Galaxy S II for T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint. Then late last month, Sammy officially launched the LTE version of the Galaxy S II, which is slightly bigger and better than the original GSII. Canadian carrier Rogers Wireless is now gearing up to launch the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE in Canada, and they are planning to launch it on Sept. 20. Users in Toronto and Ottawa will be able to get their hands on it before anyone else.  Have a look at a statement from Rogers:

Customers in Toronto and Ottawa can be among the first in the world to experience LTE wireless devices when the company continues to roll out its LTE product line this fall.  It includes:  the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE Smartphone; the LTE Rocket mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 754S); Rogers LTE Rocket stick (now available in Ottawa); LTE Tablet from a leading manufacturer; and the previously announced HTC Smartphone.

No word on pricing, but we expect it to run around $200-$250. So, is anyone in Canada planning to pick up a Galaxy S II next week? Drop a comment below!

If you happen to use the Opera Mobile browser for Android you’ll be happy to know it’s been updated and fixes quite a few issues. For those of you not familiar with Opera Mobile, it is an alternative browser that Android users can download for free from the Android Market, and while I don’t personally use it, some would say it has its benefits. You’re going to want to grab this update as it takes care of a security loophole and adds some extra support for those of you using a Honeycomb device. Here’s what’s new in the Opera Mobile 11.1 update:

  • Added support for Honeycomb large screen compatibility mode
  • Added support for font styles on Samsung Galaxy devices
  • Fix for black screen when starting Opera Mobile on some devices
  • Fix for problem with text disappearing in text fields
  • Fix for HTML5 tag auto-play
  • Fix for mismatched RGB colors on some devices
  • Fix for various stability issues on certain devices
  • Fix for various font issues on certain devices
  • Fix for security issue: http://bit.ly/android-11-1-update-2

Apparently a lot of users who want to download Opera Mobile have some anxiety over the applications various permissions. If you haven’t already downloaded Opera Mobile and are concerned about the various permissions, I suggest checking out the Opera forums where they detail what each permission is for and why they ask for it.

If you’re looking for the update or want to try out Opera Mobile for Android just follow the Market link below.

Sony Ericsson has taken a bit of a proactive approach for their 2011 Xperia handsets, pledging support for an unannounced Android platform.  A representative recently spoke with SoMobile confirming that all of their current generation devices will receive Android 4.0, or, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Expected in either October or November, the next version of Android will combine pieces of Gingerbread and Honeycomb in a new user interface. It’s worth pointing out that this does not mean Sony Ericsson is expecting to roll out the update  in short order.  Consider this their way of making people feel better about buying a device today, hopefully casting fears of obsolescence aside.

UPDATE: According to SoMobile, Sony Ericsson has told them that no decision has been made regarding upgrading all 2011 Xperia phones to Ice Cream Sandwich upon availability. Here’s what they had to say…

Sony Ericsson has told us that the company has made no official decision to update its 2011 Xperia phones to Android 4.0 – despite the comments from a Sony Ericsson representative at a London press event yesterday. Still, here’s hoping…

Here’s the official statement: “When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view.

The bottom line is that Ice Cream Sandwich updates, as with all Android updates, will depend on the hardware’s ability to handle it. I’m sure it will also matter whether or not the company sees updating their devices to be cost effective. Guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.
