It would appear the only thing that delayed Ice Cream Sandwich from rolling out to you Nexus S owners was Verizon. Now, just a day after Verizon released the Galaxy Nexus, we get official word from Google that Ice Cream Sandwich will begin rolling out to GSM Nexus S devices starting today. Hallelujah!
You may not see the update right away, as the roll-out is scheduled to last over the next month or so — but if you happen to have a GSM T-Mobile Nexus S — here are some instructions on how to manually update your device:
[Do not try this on CDMA Nexus S]
- Go ahead and get the OTA package
- Rename it to update.zip
- Copy it to the root of your internal storage on your Nexus S.
- Power off your device. Then hold volume up and power to reboot to the bootloader.
- Select recovery using the volume keys, then press the power button.
- once you see a warning triangle and arrow, hold the power button and press volume up.
- Select “apply update from /sdcard,” and choose update.zip
- Once it’s done doing its thing, simply select “reboot system now” and Voila!
Welcome to the Ice Cream Sandwich of the month club! We’ll let you know when it becomes available for you CDMA users, so just sit tight. Enjoy!

A lot of big companies are accepting Android as a formidable OS, and it seems Epson is now planning to throw their hat into the ring. AndroidAndMe is reporting that Epson is working on a “mysterious” Android-powered device and they will officially launch it at MWC in February. We have no idea what’s the device is going to look like, or even what’ll be under the hood at this point. We expect that more will be uncovered as we get closer to Mobile World Congress.
We’ll be at CES in Las Vegas next month, where we’ll hopefully get our first look at whatever it is Epson has up their sleeves. Unfortunately we’ve been advised that it will be under NDA and the rest of you will have to wait until February to find out. But we’ll try our best to get some solid information on it nevertheless.
So are you looking forward to an Epson Android device? Any guesses as to what it is? Drop a comment below!

I don’t know why this is not really showing in Google Search results, but if you want to step through the core Android Java code in your Eclipse project, finally there’s a legitimate and very convenient solution that is a part of ADT-Addons project. The steps are pretty self-explanatory, but just in case, here’s what you need to do:
- In your Eclipse click Help->Install New Software
- Click the “Add” button and put this URL into the resulting pop-up (name it whatever you want)
- Click “OK” and mark the “Android Sources” checkbox
- Click “Next” and any “OK”, “Agree”, “Next,” or “Finish” buttons afterwards
- Restart Eclipse after the installation, and now you can step right into Android code from your debugger and see the source code for Android Java files right in the Eclipse editor.
Hopefully this helps some developers, or even some beginners with Android Java projects.

Cleversense, developers of the popular iOS app Alfred, announced earlier this week that the Android version of their recommendation tool is available for 2.2+ devices. Available for free, the app provides users with a “simple, enjoyable, and powerful way to discover new places and help make decisions on the go.” In other words it helps you find the best the best places for you to eat. Immediately upon opening the app Alfred serves you up with some spots to check out. And like all smart applications, the more you use it, the better it gets.
Rather than simply porting over an existing app to another platform, Cleversense took the opportunity to create a better experience for Android users.
The new design of Alfred gives him a more modern style, while creating a much smoother user experience throughout the app. Also, many of the features have been
refined from the iOS version; for instance, it is now much easier to fine-tune your recommendations using the Filters pull-up menu. The Find tool is also much smarter at helping you look for anything specific you might have in mind.
Sounds awesome, right? It is. In fact, it’s so awesome that Google has decided to open up the wallet and purchase Cleversense. A new post on the company’s blog tells us that bigger and better things are on the horizon. We don’t claim to be prophetic or anything but this sounds like a key component for an official Siri-like experience for Android.
Today, we are excited to join Google and start a new chapter in curating the world around us! Together with the Google team, we will accelerate our efforts toward this shared vision. Google helps local businesses connect with potential customers, and its worldwide presence can bring the value of Clever Sense to a much larger audience.

How would you like to measure your Android’s battery life in terms of weeks instead of days or hours? That may soon be a reality thanks to Mirasol Mems technology which promises up to three weeks of life and uses no backlight. One of the first devices to offer this display technology, the Kyobo Book Centre, has landed in the real world and Netbook News was able to check it out. Hardware includes a 5.7-inch 1024×768 display, a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm S2 processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Putting that aside, what did they think of the screen technology?
Video playback came in just under 30 frames per second which they found to be good enough for average viewing however gaming enthusiasts will not be impressed. Given the technology is geared more toward eReaders, it would be more than sufficient for books, magazines, and general video (no YouTube HD).
Colors were described as decent but not vibrant and viewing angles were less than impressive. The glossy display affected color brilliance in sunlight however it’s not essential to be glossy for mobile devices. Results will ultimately vary depending on what hardware makers decide to do with it.
We likely won’t see anything in the ways of Mirasol devices until the second half of 2012 but partner announcements may come in the next few weeks at CES. The eReader in the video will retail for roughly $310.00 (US) with the option to get a discounted one for $265 assuming you live in Korea and have a Kyobo loyalty rewards membership.

A new feature for Google+ has been announced today which makes it easy to convert a normal status update/conversation into a Hangout with video. Let’s say you and your buddies are watching a bowl game this winter and each of you has a little bit to say, bragging your team up or talking trash over your friend’s pick. Instead of going back and forth with +1’s and text updates, turn that into a Hangout and go live with video.
Google has also made it clear that it should not be long before Hangouts can be broadcast live on air and then automatically recorded and uploaded to YouTube accounts. Already available to a select group of users and personalities, Google has begun rolling it out to a larger base.

Be sure to check out the rest of the Google+ announcement for the full details, including proactive notifications of invites to Hangouts, and dial-in to Hangouts! Keep an eye out for an updated Android application in the next few days.

This may not be the device you were hoping Verizon would announce, but look on the bright side: at least we know Verizon hasn’t forgotten how to announce a device. Okay, not really a bright side but in Verizon’s defense… I’ve got nothing.
Well, if you’ve been holding on to that upgrade, just waiting for a white version of the DROID RAZR, then tomorrow’s your lucky day. Verizon has announced the availability of its new “flashy colored” DROID RAZR, which will begin selling tomorrow for $299 both online and at retail stores. There’s nothing new about the device other than the color but Verizon is quick to point out that they got this device out “Just in time for the holidays.” Really Verizon? You were worried about getting this out in time for the holidays but you’re still dragging your feet on the most anticipated device of the year?
For those of you who are in fact interested in the white DROID RAZR, Verizon is offering a limited time offer of $100 off a DROID XYBOARD tablet when you purchase one with a new two-year customer agreement. That may be something to consider if you also had your eyes on one of the newly released DROID XYBOARD tablets.
That’s it! Nothing more to see here. Still no ‘official’ announcement on the Galaxy Nexus. For more information on the White DROID RAZR hit the presser below.

If you’ve made the transition away from a laptop or netbook and over to a tablet then you know the added mobility brings a tad bit of added awkwardness. For all the good that standard on-screen keyboards and third party options offer there nothing replaces a physical keyboard. Unfortunately most keyboards are thicker than today’s average tablets. Toshiba has recently released a wireless keyboard (PA3959U-1ETB) which is both compact and lightweight yet functional at the same time.

Moving from a full-sized keyboard from a desktop computer down to laptop or netbook can be aggravating as we can get all too comfortable with the spacing and layout. Toshiba does a great job with this keyboard as it feels as spacious as a laptop but without bulk and heft. At roughly half a pound and less than a half (.35″) inch thick, it’s lighter and thinner than most tablets. Powered by an internal rechargeable battery, it gets juice from a micro-USB port and can charge from the same plug as your smartphone or tablet.
The Toshiba keyboard include 80 full-sized tile keys, including 17 Android-specific hotkeys for search, menu, home, and more. I’ve come to appreciate the ease at which I can launch into my calendar, swipe screens, return home, and even pound out an email with the keyboard.
Pairing the keyboard over Bluetooth is very easy thanks to the button underneath and the LED lights in the top row. Battery life is excellent, lasting more than a few days at a time, and charging is very quick. I tend to charge up the keyboard every other day or so just out of habit and because I never know when I’ll be working from the tablet instead of a laptop or desktop. Without the Toshiba keyboard it has become difficult for me to feel half as efficient on my Toshiba Thrive tablet. Of course the Bluetooth allow for universal connectivity so it also works well for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, XOOM, and HTC Flyer.
All the office productivity I need…
Toshiba offers the keyboard for $69.99 if you purchase it directly from their website however various outlets offer it at lower prices. Amazon, for instance, lists it at $57.50 today however I don’t know how long the discounted cost will last. This keyboard would make for a greatfor the Android tablet owner in your life!

How would you like to be able to purchase a Coke or Butterfinger from a vending machine using your Android-powered smart phone? What if you could easily alert the vending company that your bag of chips has become stuck on the way down? What if you could suggest new items for restocking so that the office machine has a better selection, directly from your phone? Wheels are already in motion for this and much more, thanks to Google Wallet and Cantaloupe Systems.
Cantaloupe Systems is a San Francisco-based start-up that provides technology to vending machines and has been hard at work getting NFC payment terminals in units in the Bay Area, Chicago and other cities. Once in place, consumers will be able to tap their smart phone against the terminal and pay for snacks and drinks. What’s more, the technology also opens the door to rewards and offers from vendors who want you to consider their items.
Cantaloupe indicates that they have installed 6,000 NFC bezels thus far, but there are nearly 80,000 machines in their network. Looking at the bigger picture, there are more than six million vending machines across the country.
