Version 3 of the popular Swiftkey for Android is now available in the Google Play Store and Amazon Appstore.  Offered for a limited time discount of $1.99, the keyboard has undergone some changes since its last release and is full of features requested by the community.  Details include two new themes, a smarter UI, larger space bar, dedicated comma button, and support for 42 languages. For the next seven days, Swiftkey will be on sale at half price for $1.99 and is a free upgrade for existing users.

Here’s a summary of what’s new:

  • Smart Space – adding to SwiftKey’s already cutting edge correction, Smart Space detects mistyped or omitted spaces across strings of sloppily typed words in real-time.
  • Two new themes – a new theme, ‘Cobalt’, to match SwiftKey’s new look and feel, and an Ice Cream Sandwich-styled ‘Holo’ theme, as voted for by you.
  • An enhanced UI – a much larger space bar and smart punctuation key help improve accuracy and make it quick and easy to access common punctuation.
  • Additional languages – SwiftKey 3 now offers support for an additional seven languages, bringing the total up to 42. The new languages are Korean, Estonian, Farsi, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Serbian.

Since launching the Beta, we’ve taken your valuable feedback on board to include the following:

  • A dedicated comma key, and the <123> key in the bottom-left corner.
  • A refined Smart Punctuation pop-up for better, more consistent behavior.
  • An improved Smart Space functionality for easier email addresses and URL entry.
  • Reduced lag on some devices for a more responsive experience.
  • A reintroduction of the long-press duration setting by popular request.
  • Further improved prediction algorithms for even more accurate next word suggestions.
  • Refined gestures for a smoother experience.

Note that the Amazon Appstore may not yet have the discounted price.

Nomophobia: the fear of being out of mobile phone contact. The term is an abbreviation for “no-mobile-phone phobia”.

How long has it been since you last checked your phone for a message, notification, or simply to see what time it is?  Where were you when you did it?  Driving? Eating dinner?  Lookout Mobile Security recently polled 2,000 American mobile users to find out how often we check our phones, where we take them, and how we’d feel if we lost them.  What did they find?  Apparently we don’t know how to put smartphones down for a while and would absolutely panic if we left them somewhere or lost them.

Here’s a few statistics that stand out:

  • 58% of smartphone owners said they don’t go an hour without checking their phone
  • 30% check their phones during a meal
  • 94% of people are concerned about losing their phone
  • When asked to select which feeling they best identified with when they lost their phone, 73% reported feeling “panicked” and 14% reported feeling “desperate”

Lookout blog

Mobile Mindset Study Reveals Americans’ Smartphone Attachment is Altering Our Behaviors and Emotions

Lookout’s nationwide data shows 24% check smartphones while driving and 73% feel panicked about phone loss, among other stats

San Francisco – June 21, 2012 – Lookout, makers of an app to protect your smartphone, today released the Mobile Mindset Study, analyzing and exploring data-based trends in the emotions and behavior driven by our smartphones. As people rely more on their smartphones, they are increasingly checking their phones in bed, in the bathroom, at the dinner table, and while driving.

Lookout found the frequency that people check their smartphones is increasing:

  • 58% of smartphone owners said they don’t go an hour without checking their phone
  • 54% of smartphone owners said they check their phones while lying in bed: before they go to sleep, after they wake up
  • Nearly 4 out of 10 people (39%) check their phones while using the bathroom

The smartphone attachment is also enabling a whole new genre of mobile etiquette:

  • 30% check their phones during a meal
  • 24% check their phones while driving
  • Nearly 1 in 10 (9%) check their phones during religious services at a house of worship

The findings are further evidence of a social phenomenon called nomophobia: the extreme fear of being without a mobile phone:

  • Lookout’s survey found that 94% of people are concerned about losing their phone
  • When asked to select which feeling they best identified with when they lost their phone, 73% reported feeling “panicked” and 14% reported feeling “desperate”

“Our phones are our lifeline, from sharing photos with social networks to shopping and managing bank accounts,” said Alicia diVittorio, mobile safety advocate at Lookout.

“The findings establish that our attachment to smartphones is driving a new mobile mindset. Our behaviors, emotions and social interactions are impacted by smartphones, to the extent that they now play an important role in our value systems.”

With smartphones being critical to everyday life, there are a few basic steps Lookout recommends to protect your mobile:

  • Don’t lose it: Keep your smartphone in a zipped pocket or bag when you’re on the move and scan your area when leaving public places to make sure you don’t leave it behind
  • Keep your power: Make sure you charge your battery before you leave the house or keep a charger in the car – not only will it keep your phone alive, but it will help to track it down if you misplace it
  • Keep it safe: Download an app like Lookout so you can find your phone if you lose it, lock & wipe your data if it cannot be recovered and backup your personal information

Lookout commissioned Harris to survey more than 2,000 American smartphone owners on how much they use, where they use and how they feel about their phones.

Ever wondered what a threesome between Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7 would look like? Well, something like the new skin Sharp just introduced for its Japanese phones dubbed ‘Feel UX’. Feel looks nothing like stock Android, but it’s not a clone of another operating system, either.

Instead, it offers a beautiful and customizable lockscreen and an interesting take on the app drawer. There is no homescreen, just an app drawer. Swipe to the right, and you’ll find a Metro-like list of widgets and another tab to the right there’s a bunch of customizable shortcuts. Enough chatter, take a look in the video below:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The features in a nutshell:

  • Personalized and innovative lock-screen experience, allowing users to browse photos and widgets without unlocking the devices
  • Real-time weather display motion experience and animation
  • Desirable, gender-neutral palette and visuals
  • Streamlined, curated home space to smoothly manage applications, widgets, and shortcuts

We knew it was only a matter of time for the Galaxy S III to get some official Cyanogenmod love, and here it is: the first official Cyanogenmod 9 builds from Teamhacksung have been rolled out to Samsung’s new flagship. The buglist is noticably short and minor: the FM-radio doesn’t work, the camera tends to FC every now and then, the device doesn’t wake up using the volume keys and audio in calls doesn’t work properly. That was it.

We already installed Cyanogenmod 9 on our device, and the buglist doesn’t lie: Everything works and is smooth as butter, except for the calling audio. The mic works, but the earpiece is not working and the speaker sounds distorded, which is quite surprising, given the fact that it took almost a half year of nightlies for the Galaxy S II to reach this point. So, if the new Touchwiz was holding you back or preventing you from buying the Galaxy S III, moan no more!

Fans of the new Cyanogenmod-alternative called AOKP can rejoice too, their favorite ROM is available as well.

Looking to do your part as a responsible driver but want to keep a tight leash on your wallet?  Consider the SuperTooth CRYSTAL Bluetooth Car Kit and Speakerphone and its $40 price point. For the money you get a solid device with very respectable talk/standby time and the ability to pair two devices at once.

About as long as your typical Android handset, the SuperTooth CRYSTAL features echo cancellation, double nose cancellation, full duplex connectivity, and more.  Charging is done via microUSB and takes about 2.5-3 hours from zero juice.  SuperTooth promises 20 hours talk time and 1000 hours standby time but we’ve never put that to the test.  Get into the habit of using your car charger around once a week and you should be good.

Additional details include the ability to control call volume, call waiting, call reject, last call redialing, and voice recognition dialing.  Since it’s Bluetooth we’re talking about, connectivity is a cinch and range is around 30 feet.

One of our favorite features for the SuperTooth CRYSTAL is the automatic wake and pairing which happens whenever you enter the car.  Thanks to its intelligent speakerphone, a simple shut of a car door is often all it takes for the device to wake up and pair with your handset.

Another feature we like is the magnetic snap that attaches the device to its visor clamp.  The portable size of the CRYSTAL allows for us to take the speakerphone into the office with us so we can continue listening to a podcast or album.  The speaker itself is just about the loudest we’ve reviewed, besting some mini-speaker systems.  This was a huge plus for us when testing with turn-by-turn navigation on a car full of chatty children.

Yes, you can pick up a SuperTooth CRYSTAL from the SuperTooth Store for $69.99 however we found them nearly half that price on Amazon.  As of right now, the CRYSTAL is listed with a $37.99 price point and is worth every penny.  Color options include black, blue, and grey.

How does a 7-inch Android 4.0 tablet for under $100 sound to you?  California-based Idolian Mobile has unveiled their new Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet which has the distinct honor of coming in with a $98 price tag. Features for the IdolPad PLUS include a 1GHZ CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, microSD expansion, and a 2800mAh battery.  On the surface, these specs are as good as we’d like, if not more.  On the software front, the IdolPad PLUS offers users a full-on Google Play experience and access to hundreds of thousands of apps.

The real test will come in the build quality and whether Idolian Mobile cuts corners and cheapens on plastic and other materials.  It’s worth noting that this guys is missing both Bluetooth and GPS, much like the Kindle Fire. And, as appealing as the total package is, the biggest challenge ahead will be getting the word out.  Look for the IdolPad PLUS on Amazon, Sears, buy.com and other online outlets with shipping that begins today, June 18.

Tablet Innovator Idolian.com Unveils Lowest-Price PC in Its Class: IdolPad PLUS

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Idolian Mobile (www.idolian.com) announces IdolPad PLUS, a new Tablet PC model at a low price of $98. The newest Idolian Tablet PC features the Android 4.0 operating system and a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. At $98, the IdolPad PLUS is the lowest priced 7-inch Android Tablet PC currently available in the market.

The IdolPad PLUS follows Idolian’s highly successful IdolPad priced at $99, which has garnered heavy interest and continues in popularity with a large number of sales since it was released. Customer satisfaction with the product has been positive as well.

IdolPad PLUS offers a capacitive touch screen which has a lower response time and is more sensitive than a resistive touch screen. Also, the capacitive touch screen transmits 90 percent of the light emitted from it which provides a better viewing experience. It also offers a Cortex A8 1 GHz CPU processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB storage. The design is very thin and light with fully functional Android Google Play and Adobe Flash Player. And with its price tag of $98, the IdolPad PLUS is significantly less expensive than competitors, such as the Apple iPad and the Amazon Kindle.

Expecting to generate heavy interest in the product, Jay Kim, founder of Idolian Mobile, states that “The IdolPad PLUS will be available for pre-orders on our website (www.idolian.com) by June 8 and shipping will begin June 18.” Also, it will be available for sale on Amazon, Sears and buy.com as well.

In addition to the IdolPad PLUS, Idolian will introduce TouchTab IPS, IdolPad 10 and TurboTab 10 within the next few weeks. The company also plans to add an action camera/camcorder to its current product offerings.

Currently, Idolian offers 11 different Tablet PC models from its website. Tablet PC accessories and an extended protection plan are also available.

“We believe IdolPad PLUS brings more options to the tablet PC market,” concluded Kim. “Although anyone can appreciate the price point and features, teachers and schools will see IdolPad PLUS as a cost-effective way to bring tablet access into the classroom. Parents will also love giving their children a platform for games and movies without the iPad price tag.”

About Idolian Mobile
