Evernote has launched a completely new version of their note-keeping-task-managing-remember-it-in-the-cloud-and-share-it application for Android tablet and it’s unlike anything they have done before.  Chief among the details in this release are the ability to create notes with rich text, lists,  and checkboxes. There’s also performance improvements, a redesigned widget, and a bunch of other goodies.  We had a chance to see this in person back at Google IO and we could not wait for it to arrive.

We just checked the Android Market listing and it still shows the previous version.  However, our tablet already knew there was an update available so results may vary depending on when you read this.  Either way, hit up the Evernote blog for more details and then download from the link below!  Or do it in reverse.  We won’t judge.

The guys over at Software Advice have compiled a list of the best Android apps available for those working in construction. Apparently, there aren’t that many apps out there for construction financing and estimating, but these guys have found the best of the best for everyone to see. So, anyone out there that’s into construction can check out the list here, and hopefully you’ll find something that’s helpful in that big project.

Any of you readers work in construction? What do you think of the apps listed?  Maybe you found a better one?

Sound off in the comments below, or on our Facebook Wall! Big thanks to Derek for the tip as well!

Have you ever had someone on the phone that owed you money say, “I’ll pay you back next time I see you.”, only to have them avoid you in person?  I think we all have, but now there is a solution for Android users to get their money back and much more with the latest update to the Thrutu app.

To refresh your memory, Thrutu allows you to interact with a person you have on your Android powered phone in more ways than just voice, such as sharing locations and even interacting with live sketches. Today Thrutu has announced that they have added 11 more button features, including a paypal button which allows you to send and receive funds right there on a call, deadbeat debtors beware! Here are the features from the press release:

The 11 new buttons now available are:

  • PayPal – Send money over a phone call, instantly and securely. For example, when you call someone with a friendly reminder to pay you back, they can immediately transfer the funds into your account.
  • Meet Me – Quickly find the best place to meet in person.  Meet Me suggests venues, like cafes or movie theaters, that are located halfway between the two callers. On Thrutu, you can instantly discuss your options and agree upon the destination.
  • Shared Search – Search and browse the web together. Either caller enters a word, and both can see and click on the results.
  • Doodle – Share sketches in real-time.  Doodle is also integrated with sharing locations and photos in Thrutu, so users can add a personal touch, such as an arrow on a map or a heart or smiley face to a shared photo.
  • Coin Flip – Make decisions or settle arguments with the toss of a coin.
  • Mood Ring – A cute way to let the other caller know how you’re feeling – without having to use words.
  • 15 Together and Tic Tac Toe – Play classic games across the Thrutu platform, all while continuing conversations, encouraging competitive banter.
  • My Flickr™ and My Twitter™ – View pictures or read tweets together, with instant, shared access to Flickr and Twitter streams.
  • Wish You Were Here? – Share your local weather forecast. Whether on a tropical vacation or snowed in at home, callers can gloat (or complain) about their current weather while on the phone.

Not a bad lineup of features offered. Even better, Thrutu is offering a limited beta sign up for developers to get involved in designing buttons for Thrutu using their API’s. I am looking forward to seeing what the dev community can come up with for us to use.

You can download Thrutu using our handy dandy download block below!

DISCLAIMER:  There is a modicum of common sense that a person needs to have, if you have been drinking, you may be too impaired to drive.  Use your head.

There is a new app announced today from Lone Wolf Mobile that is designed to help a person know if they are too impaired from drinking to drive.  Called “DUI kNOw! Stand”, the app uses the motion sensors inside your android device to see if you can keep your balance on one leg during a 30 second test.
The app mirrors the one leg test that a police officer uses during an actual DUI stop. A quote from the press release:

Up until now, this was a test that required two people and usually was only administered by law enforcement. With the DUI kNOw! Stand app, this test can now be performed by one person and at any time desired. The test records and measures angles in a manner that is consistent and not open to interpretation.
DUI kNOw! Stand will speak the results of the test. If more details about the error count are desired, a button causes the phone to speak the details of the test results as well as offer some hints about receiving a better score. All instructions are spoken out loud and the extensive help is also spoken out loud. Since scores and instructions are spoken out loud, the only requirements for taking this test are pushing buttons on the phone and placing and removing the phone from a front pants pocket. The app is especially designed for ease of use and helpfulness. DUI kNOw! Stand is a quick, inexpensive and easy way to find out if driving might be hazardous or illegal.

There are two version of the app on the Market, a free version that proves the concept works, then a $.99 full version that administers the entire test. Use the download block below to check the app out.

I have been in the fortunate position to have spent the last few weeks playing with a pair Sonos S5 ZonePlayers and the accompanying Android application.  I’d love to give you a long-winded breakdown of how it works, what it does, and wrap things up neatly in the end.  However, I’m not the kind of guy  to waste your time – so here’s your spoiler alert.  The Sonos S5  system is every bit as good as advertised.  Seriously, it’s at the top of the list of things I’ve ever reviewed.  Whereas I once balked at the price point, today I see total justification.

Still need more convincing?  Read on!

Prior to Sonos, my typical work day consisted of playing Pandora and Slacker Radio on the PC while I worked.  I’d also play my favorite podcasts and downloads as they became available.  On average, there was some form of background noise better than half the time I worked.  In this post-Sonos era, I am playing something 100% of the work day, and more.  And now, it’s not playing directly in my face any longer.  My speaker sits across the office and plays louder and clearer than ever before.

Like many of you, I get my day started with a cup of coffee in the kitchen.  As I walk from the bedroom through the house, I turn the app on and begin with NPR Morning Edition.  If I am behind a bit, I’ll pull up a recently played archive or tune in to another station from somewhere else in the country.  Once I hit the office, I’ll check various shows and get caught up with other NPR goodies such as Fresh Air, All Things Considered, and Snap Judgement.  After that, I am all over the place.  Depending on my mood, I will jump from one Pandora station to another, getting into a good working rhythm.

The Sonos Controller app lets me manage everything from my phone sitting right in front of me.  The app is intuitive, easy to use, and fun to mess around with.  I find myself skipping around, stumbling upon new music and shows.  My only gripe so far is that the app is not available for tablets running Honeycomb.

A few of the nearly unlimited music sources from Sonos

Sonos lets me log in and play music from a variety of sources, including Napster, Last.fm, SiriusXM, Rhapsody, Rdio, and iheartradio.  Since I am a podcast junkie, I like to download a bunch of shows locally to my phone or tablet.  The back side of an S5 features an auxiliary input so that I can enjoy those as well.  The best part here is that I can plug in directly to one S5 unit and pipe it throughout the house, on other units.  Then there’s that whole ability to control the music from your desktop. Playing music through one of these speakers is heads and tails above anything your computer speakers can do.  I don’t care how much you spent on them, they simply aren’t as good.

The first “A-Ha” moment for me came on the second night I had it set up.  We were getting pounded with hours of rain and then the thunder started to roll in.  My 7-year old son was sleeping in the room next to the office, but he wakes easily from such noise.  So, turned some classical music on for him to make sure he wasn’t roused from his sleep.  I did this from my couch.  I was able to browse various stations – locally, nationally, and internet-based.  I could also control just how loud it played and turn it off later. It’s worth pointing out that my other Sonos ZonePlayer was playing something entirely different just down the hall.

I really enjoy merging the the two ZonePlayers together and blasting music crazy loud.  The sound that comes out of these is truly impressive, considerably louder and sharper than I would have anticipated.  These players are light enough that I can take them from room to room, finding new and fun ways to use them.  I love putting a pair of these on opposite sides of a room and cranking the volume.  It gets a “wow” from visitors every single time.

Sonos is incredibly simple to set up and get going; You’ll be playing music in minutes.  While I was able to skip past the user manual and drivers, not everyone can jump right in. There are terrific online tools at your disposal should you need some extra TLC, but I suspect you’ll be fine.

If you are like me, you might have a tough time looking past the $399 price tag.  In an age of watching discretionary spending, this is definitely not for everyone.  However, I can practically guarantee that you’ll soon be considering a second (or third) device should you opt for a Sonos ZonePlayer.  On a side note, I’d be very interested in learning how many repeat buyers Sonos has on file.  Given the nearly unlimited access to music sources, simple management, and overall sound quality, the Sonos S5 is worth every penny.  Of all the accessories that I’ve had the chance to review, this will be the hardest to part with.
