Let’s all give Samsung an A for effort so far on their “after-sale” support of the Galaxy SII. Last week we saw official Android v4.0 drop and, as unusual at it may sound, they are right on time with delivering the source code to Ice Cream Sandwich! Huge news for developers, this is still one of the most popular phones to date. No source has been plaguing the dev community for some time, I know codeworkx (the leading dev for the international SGSII) and his followers are happy to see this. He’s already been poking Samsung, who hasn’t had the best track record with open source stuff in the past.

All that being said, if you are a developer wanting to peruse the code or even a curious wannabe-dev go check it out!

Samsung Open Source Portal

You’ll need to search for the device, so type in GT-i9100 and knock yourself out!

I have a Nexus S 4G on Sprint. And I’m mad as heck. Well… not mad, but frustrated. It has been nearly 5 months since Android 4.0 was announced at a special event in Hong Kong. My girlfriend and I waited, stayed up, watched it and fell in love with the update. This was literally everything I’ve wanted.  Once the Ice Cream Sandwich update arrives, my Nexus S 4G would absolutely be the best phone ever made!

And so began the very familiar wait for any information. I set up my usual Google Alerts for “Android 4.0 Nexus S 4G”… and waited. I checked all the big tech sites – daily, sometimes hourly, for the first few weeks. No dates. I wasn’t totally turned off, like I said, with Android we are used to NO information – which is ridiculous. Then hark! Early December 2011, I was tipped off by my Google+ community of Nexus S users – that the update may be released by the end of December! Hooray! Best Christmas present ever.  However, as we all know, that didn’t happen – or did but… then didn’t. The update appeared to have been released for “some” GSM users then paused due to a battery issue.

Anyway, long story short, this is ridiculous. I bought a phone from the Nexus line to enjoy the earliest of updates and get the pure Android experience. Both is crap. The Nexus S should have been the first to get Android 4.0 period.

Now I hear from my angry fellow Google+ Nexus S friends, that there’s a new rumor that the Nexus S may never get the update. You have to be kidding me. I’ve waited this entire time and now an update may really not happen? I’ve heard rumors that the now antiquated Wimax (or the “slower” processor) may be to blame, but the phone is not even a year old (on Sprint)! Google should have prepared the device for further updating – prior to release.  And, really, the 4G is a joke. Or maybe it’s just me… on the Nexus S, since it has such terrible reception…

Click here to view the embedded video.

.

I really feel that Google and Sprint owe us an explanation. Are you going to upgrade this phone or not? Simple question. No need for secrecy. If not, I have suffered with a phone with a bad radio, weird ticks, and poor battery life in the wry hopes of getting Android 4.0 … for nothing.

I literally don’t know where to go from here – rooting does not appeal to me for multiple reasons, the main one simply being I shouldn’t have to! And my girlfriend has an iPhone, so I know both worlds – both options, per se. And, I am not really into the iPhone. I primarily use Google products for work and – let’s face it – the Android platform has the best integration with Google products. She is using Microsoft Exchange to sync things and doesn’t have a native Docs app, that I use on a daily basis.

I am alone on an island just waiting for my next direction to be screamed at me by Google.  Thank God I have a great community of fellow Android and Nexus users who are just as upset as I am on Google+.  We even started a petition to get Google and Sprint to listen… if you’re one of us make sure to sign it!

Make a simple announcement Google, before you lose an entire generation to Windows Phone 7 or the iPhone.

Motorola recently adjusted their Android 4.0 update timeline for a number of smartphones and tablets.  Of particular note this time around is that, come the second quarter, the Ice Cream Sandwich update will hit every version of the Razr save for the U.S. model.  Yep – that means that Europe, Africa, Latin America, Korea, Japan… everywhere else but stateside.  Our Verizon-branded model is still in the “evaluation and planning” stage.  The same still goes for the Droid 4, Droid Razr Maxx, and a number of other smartphones.

PHASE 1 – EVALUATION & PLANNING: During this phase, we evaluate the benefits, technical issues and user experience of an upgrade. Generally, we are not able to provide release dates in this stage. There are also some cases in which we can state that an upgrade will happen but are not able to provide a release date. Please note that some products that enter the Evaluation and Planning phase may not complete the upgrade cycle.

Keep in mind that things are always subject to change and that timelines will vary, depending on how a carrier plays ball with Motorola.  We’re bummed for sure, but at least they didn’t scrap it altogether.  Yet.

Respect knuckles to Dale for the heads up.

Samsung has officially begun sending out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update to the European Galaxy S II handset. Confirmed in a Facebook post yesterday, the update is also hitting Korea, Poland, Hungary, and Sweden and will “gradually roll out” to other markets in short order. Pocket-Lint advises that new countries will see their update on March 19th.

In addition, we’ll also offer Android 2.3 Gingerbread firmware upgrades for GALAXY S, GALAXY Tab 7″, GALAXY S Plus, GALAXY S SCL (Super Clear LCD) and GALAXY W from end March. The firmware upgrades for GALAXY S, for example, include Face Unlock, Snapshot, Photo Editor, and others.

Keep in mind that this 4.0 update is not intended for the handset you picked up from T-Mobile, Sprint, or AT&T. Those carrier-branded U.S. editions will have to wait a bit before any hard news surfaces. Up next for Samsung are the Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Today is a monumental day for  Android developers as Google announced a pretty tasty treat last night.  Google has increased application size limits to 4GB each, up considerably from 50MB.  That’s not to say that the actual size of an APK has been increased, it still stays capped at 50MB.

Should a developer need some hosting for their application, Google will handle that as well, bundling  two additional 2GB expansion files in the process.  These additional files would be automatically downloaded from the Android Market and the 15-minute refund window will wait until everything is installed.

For older devices, developers can  use a Google-supplied library to manage the download. If you are a developer or just looking for more info, then check out the source below.

Well, what do you think about this great move by Google? Tell us in the comment box below.

It’s worth pointing out that today’s news is more of an announcement than a rollout as none of them are actually available in the Snapdragon GamePack. Also, the GamePack is currently only available to users in North America, however plans are in place to expand across the globe.

  • The Reem” – a mixed martial arts (MMA) game from Khaeon Gamestudio featuring three-time UFC champion Alistair “The Reem” Overeem. “The Reem” will be released in early April exclusively on Snapdragon devices for a year.
  • “Reign of Amira” – a game designed and developed by Qualcomm’s in-house gaming studio, where Princess Amira battles her enemies to retain the lost glory of the Desert Kingdom.  The game willbe exclusive to Snapdragon devices running on Android and will be available to users for free later this year.
  • “The Ball” – a highly anticipated game from Tripwire Interactive, which will be released in March 2012.  ”The Ball” features Snapdragon’s integrated Adreno GPU with high-resolution visuals and will be first available to Snapdragon devices running on Android for six months.
  • “Virtua Tennis Challenge”™ – the first mobile version of this popular console game from gaming pioneer SEGA®.  The game will be available in March 2012 and is optimized on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor for the Xperia Play and features some of the next-generation sports play and graphics.

Google has released its own Mobile World Congress application today, putting the free app in the Android Market for devices running 2.2 or higher.  Strangely unavailable for Honeycomb tablets, Android MWC is a mobile companion to everything Android in Barcelona this week.

Features in the app are pretty much what one would expect out of its kind and include booth details, partner maps, a list of apps features at MWC, and photo notes.  Perhaps the coolest part of the client is the ability to track all of the Android Pins with a checklist.  If you’re in Barcelona this week and plan to stop by the Android booth, you’ll want to download the app.

Download Android MWC for free on your 2.2+ Android handset, including the Ice Cream Sandwich-powered Galaxy Nexus.

SwiftKey is in Barcelona this week, chatting up their uber-smart keyboard alternative with handset and tablet makers.  To take things even further, the guys have announced that they are now allowing smartphone and other device makers the opportunity to utilize their technology by way of an SDK.  Should a manufacturer want to use the software development kit, they’ll be tapping into the stuff that makes SwiftKey X one of our favorite keyboard options.  This means support for more than 40 languages, leading-edge word prediction and correction, and a friendly UI for typing.

We’ve seen other keyboard options come pre-loaded on smartphones and tablets, but how would you feel about SwiftKey technology on your next Android?

SwiftKey launches SDK for handset and device manufacturers

OEMs can integrate SwiftKey’s powerful language technology into their devices to improve core typing experience

27 February, 2012; Barcelona, Spain – SwiftKey™ (http://www.swiftkey.net), the company behind the award-winning SwiftKey X keyboard for Android™ smartphones, is making the core language-engine technology that powers its app available to OEMs. The move will allow handset and device manufacturers to embed SwiftKey’s smart language technology into their own devices through a Software Development Kit (SDK).

SwiftKey X has already proven immensely popular as a stand-alone app. It has been downloaded over five million times, making it one of the most popular paid for applications on the planet in its category. In addition, SwiftKey’s technology has been shortlisted for the Most Innovative App in this year’s GSMA Global Mobile Awards at Mobile World Congress.

The SDK enables tablet and handset manufacturers to offer cutting edge prediction and correction technology in their products, powered by SwiftKey’s Natural Language Processing language engine. OEMs can build SwiftKey’s core technology into their own keyboard and UI, to improve the core user experience of their devices. The SDK introduces a range of new features in addition to those currently available on SwiftKey X, with support for over 40 languages, including Arabic, Korean and Spanish.

Dr Ben Medlock, CTO of SwiftKey explains: “As we are interacting with more devices, technology that accurately understands what a user is trying to say or do with their devices is vital. It only takes a cursory look at user groups to realise that typing is one of the biggest frustrations that people have on tablets and smartphones. The launch of our SDK will give OEMs access to better typing experience, with their own look and feel.”

“The SDK will also enable other consumer technology devices, beyond the tablet and smartphone, to receive the benefits of our unique language engine. We have already seen interesting applications of our language engine in Smart TVs and assistive technology devices.”

SwiftKey SDK supports the following platforms and languages:

  • Android
  • C++
  • iOS
  • JVM (Java, Scala)
  • Linux
  • Mac OS X
  • .NET (C#, VB)
  • QNX/BlackBerry 10
  • WebOS
  • Windows

In the era of data caps, throttling, and falsely advertised “unlimited” data plans, quite a few users have to keep track of their monthly data usage. ICS has a nice data usage chart, along with a few alert options, to help with this. But in reality, the average user doesn’t know the difference in 20MB and 200MB when it comes to mobile data. Just how many web pages can a user load with x amount of data usage? Onavo aims to help with this, as they’ve just introduced Onavo Extend, an app exclusively made for ICS devices, both smartphone and tablet alike.

Onavo Extend builds on Onavo’s existing data usage monitor, adding a few spiffy new features, like the utilization of Google’s WebP image format, which creates massive data savings on images, without sacrificing the quality of those images. Users can navigate between the last week and the last month of data usage, to see how everything is broken down.

While it’s exclusive to Ice Cream Sandwich, the app itself does have a very sleek look to it. So without further ado, ICS users can download Onavo Extend for free from the Android Market by using the box below. Not on the latest version of Android? You can still try out Onavo’s Data Usage Monitor app.

How do you track your data usage? Do you worry about going over every month, and being throttled or charged overage fees? Let us know in the comments!
