Why do we hack and root Android devices? Because we can. And while it’s not exactly the same as rocking a dual-core tablet, the latest Nook — all six inches of it in black-and-white e-ink — has been rooted and seen running Angry Birds, of course.

That’s possible because while the Nook Touch is an e-reader on its face, it’s running Android 2.1 in its heart. And where there’s Android, there be hackery going on. This mod comes from JesusFreke in the forum of Das U-Boot (great name!), and hopefully we’ll see some easy-to-use instructions in the near future.

Just a few weeks back, Barnes & Noble’s NOOK Color picked up a software update that added support for games and applications, turning the eReader into a tablet of sorts.  No longer just a book and magazine reader, the 7-inch Android-based device would be an affordable option for people looking for a (lite) tablet experience.  But would NOOK Color users be interested in apps?  You bet they would.  Three weeks after announcing the 1.2 update, Barnes & Noble has issued a press release touting one million downloads.

Would you be surprised to learn that Angry Birds is the top paid app?  We didn’t think so.  The other best-selling apps in the B&N store are Drawing Pad, Solitaire, Aces Jewel Hunt and Astraware Mahjong.  As for free options, Fliq owns three of the top five downloads in Fliq Calendar, Fliq Notes, and Fliq Tasks.  The other two are Pulse and NOOK Word of the Day.  If you own a NOOK Color, you’d be wise to check out the available apps as new titles are added all the time!

Samsung Infuse 4G

We’re at Samsung and AT&T’s event in New York City where the Samsung Infuse 4G — that’s the monster 4.5-inch Android smartphone — has finally been given a release date and price. You can pick one up starting May 15 for $199 on contract.

The Infuse 4G, as you’ll recall, has that aforementioned 4.5-inch touchscreen — the largest on something that’s considered a smartphone and not a tablet. But it’s a mere 8.9mm thick. And that large display is Super AMOLED Plus to boot, same as what we’re very much enjoying on the Samsung Droid Charge. It’s rocking Android 2.2 Froyo, so let’s hope we see a Gingerbread update in the near future.

It’s also got an 8MP camera on the back (with 720p video recording), and a 1.3MP shooter up front, with a single-core 1.2GHz processor to power it all.

As of that’s not special enough, the Infuse will come with a special edition of Angry Birds, and Samsung’s throwing in a $25 credit for its Media Hub download service.

Full press release is after the break.

Rovio has mentioned via Twitter that Angry Birds Seasons will be getting an Easter update. It’s said to be out sometime before the fun holiday so folks will have enough time to get into spirit. It’s a perfect match for a game about pigs who steal eggs – I’m sure some sort of “hunt” will play into the storyline.

In related news, they’ve confirmed that both Rio and the original version of Angry Birds will be getting new level updates. No details were given on what they’d include and how many levels would be coming, but we’re told not to expect it this month as they’re aiming for a May release. Now excuse me while I go hide these freshly-painted easter eggs from those horrible, horrible bags of pork. [via Android Community]

The latest edition of Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise was released a little under two weeks ago. In that time span, Angry Birds Rio has been making some serious waves around the mobile app markets. In just 10 days, the combined downloads of Rio across the Amazon Appstore, Android Market, and Apple App Store have reached 10 million. Quite an impressive figure, but did you expect any less?
