Earlier his year, Dell officially launched the Streak 7 on T-Mobile. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as successful as they would’ve liked, mostly since it appeared to many as just another poor Froyo tablet. Nevertheless, Dell is still trying to catch up in the Android tablet race. Back in April, we saw the first shot of the Streak 10, rumored to be running Honeycomb. The Dell Streak 10 has shown up in the wild yet again, and it looks good, to say the least. (more…)

The Dell Streak 7 Wi-Fi model has yet to even be announced officially, but that has not stopped Amazon from placing the device up on for pre-orders. The folks over at AndroidOS spotted this page while surfing around Amazon, and while it doesn’t have an actual ship date yet, it does show a price tag of $379. Listed on the site as some of the key features of this device are:

  • Android™ 2.2-based tablet with over-the-air upgrade capability for future OS releases
  • Vibrant 7", multitouch display with full Adobe® Flash 10.1
  • 1.3 MP front-facing camera for face-to-face chats on popular services such as Qik® or Skype™
  • 16GB of internal storage, plus Wi-Fi™, Bluetooth® and built-in GPS

So, if you are in the market for a new tablet, and looking for something smaller then the Motorola Xoom, but less costly then the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, this may be a great choice for you. [Amazon via AndroidOS]

The Dell Streak 7 has been out for quite a while, but a lot of you have been holding out for a WiFi-only version to help cope with the fact that it doesn’t have Android 3.0. (At the moment, anyway.) You folks will be happy to know that the tablet sans 3G radios has gotten its WiFi certification and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.

Just $380 will get you the 7 inch tablet, but Amazon has not released any further availability information. The Dell Streak 7 is a follow-up to the original 5 inch version available on T-Mobile, but is missing phone functionality. It’s a bit beefier as far as specs go – it has a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a front-facing VGA camera and 16 gigs of internal storage – but the resolution is sadly the same at WVGA.

There’s also no guarantee that this thing will ever get official Honeycomb love. (Especially after learning that Dell has a specific 10-inch Honeycomb tablet in the works.) Let’s hope the folks at XDA can help change that sooner or later. [Amazon, WiFi Alliance via StreakSmart]

Fring update

The developers at Fring have updated their video calling application to support the Motorola Atrix and the Dell Streak.  The application isn’t yet available in the Market, but a quick trip over the the Fring blog (source link) will give you an email address to request the updated version before it gets uploaded to the Android Market.

This creates a sticky situation with the AT&T devices — sideloading is blocked by default.  There’s no need to fret though, you can use the Sideload Wonder Machine to get past that one.  You’ll be chatting face-to-face with friends and family in no time.  [Fring] Thanks, Jeremy!

ClockworkMod recovery for the Dell Streak 7

Dell Streak 7 developer graffixnyc and his band of co-horts (check the source link to see just who to thank) have successfully built ClockworkMod recovery for the Dell Streak 7.  With some help from Koush the build seems to be able to handle everything successfully except mounting the boot and recovery partitions, because Dell is using non standard partitions.

One thing to note — read the source link carefully before attempting to install.  There are currently (at the time of this writing) issues when flashing recovery from Rom Manager.  The developer goes over the correct (and simple) process of flashing this manually via fastboot very well, so read his instructions.  Now we can add one more reason to want the Honeycomb AOSP code. [XDA-Developers] Thanks Patrick, bogdi1988, and Josh!

Update: bogdi1988 got back in touch with us to let us know the Rom Manager issues have been sorted out, and recovery can be flashed direct.  Even awesomer.

While Dell is busy improving their Streak lineup with the release of the Streak 7, the good old boys at MoDaCo have been doing a bit of polishing themselves. That is, they have been polishing up a Honeycomb SDK port for the original Dell Streak Don’t worry. It’s still far from useful, but the team working on hopes to change that soon enough. We don’t want to state the obvious, but we will: this might be Streak owners’ only chance to grab some Honeycomb anytime soon, so keep your ear to the ground on this one.
