tmobile_carly_720T-Mobile today announced that the FCC has officially given the go ahead on the proposed T-Mobile and MetroPCS merger. Initially announced in October 2012, the two carriers are hoping to join and offer shared spectrum portfolios, and roll out a better 4G LTE experience

“We are pleased with the FCC’s approval of the proposed transaction,” said Roger D. Linquist, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of MetroPCS. “We thank the FCC for its prompt review of our proposed combination with T-Mobile, which will create the value leader in the United States wireless marketplace.”

All that stands in the way of the merger is stockholder approval by MetroPCS’s board. A Special Meeting is slated to take place on April 12, 2013.

The HTC Puccini, rumored to be HTC’s first ever Honeycomb tablet, was revealed back in May, and now we’re learning a bit more about the device. We told you that it will be running on a dual-core, 1.5GHz processor, with Honeycomb, Sense 3.0, and HTC’s Scribe technology. Recently, we reported that HTC would be launching it on June 27 in the UK, but it turned out to be just another rumor. Now it seems that HTC is getting ready to release it soon, as the tablet just passed the FCC with AT&T 3G bands, featuring GSM 850, 1900MHz frequencies, 3G WCDMA 850 and 1900MHz bands. It also apparently comes with an LTE radio, which means that AT&T customers will be able to enjoy it on AT&T’s 4G network later this year, and my guess is that this will be AT&T’s first ever LTE 4G tablet.

So anyone looking forward to HTC’s first ever Honeycomb tablet? Disappointed that it’ll be headed to AT&T? Sound off in the comments below or on our Facebook Wall!

I for one am not a fan of the “Facebook Phone” concept, but it looks like HTC is set on it, as their ChaCha device just passed through the FCC. The AT&T version looks slightly different from the European version, but that’s expected. If you’re not familiar with the ChaCha, it was first announced along with it’s brother, the Salsa, back in February. Originally, it was set to launch with a 600MHz processor, but HTC brought that up to 800MHz, most likely to deal with the heavy customization on the device.

The ChaCha running Gingerbread with HTC’s Sense UI, and there is Facebook integration within the contacts app, the dialer, as well as several different Facebook widgets, all on a 2.6-inch display. As you can see, it’s rocking a physical QWERTY keyboard below the screen, giving it that landscape, Blackberry-esque form factor. There’s also a nice little 5MP camera on the back, as well as a VGA front-facing camera. No word on if the ChaCha will launch with Android 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, which would bring GTalk video chat to the device.

July 17th is the date that’s being thrown around as release day for the ChaCha, but nothing is set in stone just yet. More on this as it develops. So, is anyone excited for the first Facebook phone to hit the U.S.? Upset that it’s an AT&T exclusive? Leave a comment below, or on our Facebook Wall!

It has been a few weeks since we last talked about the HTC Kingdom, but lo and behold, it’s back again.  This time, the phone has been spied in FCC documents, where we learn officially that it features a 4.3-inch qHD display as well as both CDMA and WiMAX support.  Other than that, we’re still unclear what exactly lies ahead for the PH44100 Kingdom.

Back in May, the Pocketnow team posted what they believe to be the full details. According to them, the Kingdom has a Qualcomm MSM7630 chipset, Adreno 205 GPU, 768MB RAM, a (conflicting) 4.0-inch qHD display, 1.3-megapixel front facing camera, and 5-megapixel camera on the back. What’s more, they refer to benchmarks that indicate a Scorpion single-core CPU humming at 1.2GHz. And finally, they suggest the Kingdom will ship with Android Gingerbread 2.3.3.

One particularly interesting note is that the Qualcomm MSM7630 chipset provides CDMA world support. Checking through the comments over at Engadget, one reader tosses out the idea that this could be the makings of an Evo Global.  We like the sound of that, how about you?  Whatever the case, the FCC filings tell us we’ll be finding out soon enough.

And like that, Sprint’s Android lineup just keeps getting better.

I have to admit, Huawei has a history of low-end Android devices, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon. The device above is the Huawei X1 U8180, which is being given the strange name of “Gaga”, and it’s just gotten the FCC seal of approval. The Gaga will be packing a measly 528MHz processor, along with Froyo, a 2.8-inch QVGA display, 3.2MP camera sans flash, and the standard Android fare of WiFi, GPS, 3.5mm audio jack, and a MicroSD card slot. At the moment, it runs only on 850 WCDMA bands, as well as 850/1900 GSM bands, so it’s not likely that we’ll see it in the U.S. in it’s current state.

One thing I feel obligated to point out is the lack of a Home button on the bottom of the device. It has Back, Menu, and Search buttons, but not a Home key. Of course, there is that oversized button below the capacitive keys, but it’s uncertain what function it holds. Hopefully Huawei doesn’t release the device without one, but only time will tell.

So, any readers across the pond planning to pick up this device? Anyone tired of Huawei’s low-end reputation? Leave a comment below or on our Facebook Wall!

Many Sony gaming fans were booing after Sony announced its Playstation Vita 3G would be available exclusively on AT&T, and now — many Android users who were holding out for a Sony tablet — will be doing the same. According to FCC approvals, both the cleverly code-named S1 and S2 Sony tablets (ousted back in April) will be packing support for “Team Blue.” Let’s take a look at some of the tid-bits we’ve gathered and try to make sense of this “S” sacrilege.

Sony S1

First up are the US versions of the Sony S1: SGPT111US/S, SGPT112US/S. This 9.4” Honeycomb tablet will be sporting 2.4GHz 802.11n WiFi, WCDMA bands II and V radios along with Ericsson’s F5521gw HSPA+ capable modem. Roughly translated: “Blue, Blue and possibly 21Mbps HSPA+ Blue.”

Sony S2

Next we have the US versions of the Sony S2: SGPT211US/S, SGPT212US/S. This is Sony’s attempt at out-failing the Kyocera Echo. This dual-screen clamshell tablet is equipped with two (yea I know, I said dual-screen) 5.5-inch 1024 x 480 resolution screens and will also be playing for “Team Blue” as it sports 2.4GHz 802.11 WiFi along with 850MHz and 1900MHz 3G bands. The Sony S2 will also be following in the Toshiba Thrive’s footsteps by offering a removable lithium-ion battery, which is one footstep I hope all tablet manufacturers start to follow.

While we still have many months to go before all of this comes to fruition, it’s safe to say: “If you’ve been holding out for a Sony tablet in hopes of getting a bigger “Playstation Certified” media machine, you’re going to have to settle for wifi-only, unless of course you’re willing to follow “Team Magenta” to the dark side.
