Android Market on Froyo

We showed off the new Android Market with the "update all" and "allow automatic updating" earlier, and we’ve been waiting for an app to come along to talk about this part.  I finally was close to a computer when it happened and was able to document the process instead of just talking about it.  It’s another of those nice touches that come along with Android 2.2, but this one has security and the safety of your information in mind.  Follow the break to see a step-by-step in action.

You’re going to need a Nexus One (or some other phone with a trackball capable of lighting up in different colors) to take advantage of this feature in Android 2.2, but color trackball notifications are officially here. OK, actually they’ve been available for some time in custom ROMs (and as you’ll note in the video above, I’m cheating and using CyanogenMod for demonstration purposes). But now they’re bona fide in Froyo, and we’re already starting to see them in more applications.

Android 2.2 Froyo home screen

This one’s certainly the most obvious visual change in Android 2.2, but it shouldn’t go without mention. Froyo has added icons for the phone dialer and browser on either side of the launcher icon, clearing up (for me, anyway) a couple of icon spaces on my main home screen. It actually brings a bit of functionality already found in third-party launchers such as ADW and Launcher Pro (and they offer more customization than the stock launcher), but it’s nice to see a refresh for those who prefer the stock route.

Android 2.2 Froyo Flash preview

Surely you didn’t think we would forget to show off some Flash did you?  Phil and I have been hard at work finding out everything we can about what’s new in Android 2.2, and we just saved the big parts until the end.

Flash on a mobile device used to be an idea that I just never got on board with.  That will teach me to open my mouth before trying something new.  After playing with it for a few days to prepare for this write-up, my mind has changed and I’m now a believer.  Everyone’s experience will differ, but I’m not seeing the battery decimation that we all expected, and even while playing games, the phone is still responsive and the Flash content itself — well, check out the video after the break and see for yourself.

What’s Android without gmail, right? And in Android 2.2, the gmail app has gotten even better, fixing some of our biggest complaints and bringing better account switching, e-mail notification and attachment handling. Check it out.

Android 2.2. Froyo screen brightness widget

The power widget you see here isn’t really new in Android 2.2, but it’s been tweaked for Froyo. The screen brightness selector now includes an auto brightness setting (using the ambient light sensor) in addition to the three static settings (low, medium and high). It’s a nice little addition for those of us who prefer to let the phone determine the screen brightness.

Android 2.2. Froyo - Android MarketAndroid 2.2 Froyo - Android Market

Along with Android 2.2 comes a new version of the Android Market. While we still with something could be done in regards to content (the Wild West still is in effect), Google’s begun to at least clean up the interface a bit. Comments are now in their own tab — no more scrolling down to see just one or two.

You also can see here the "Allow automatic updating" checkbox — hit it and the app will update on its own, in the background. No muss, no fuss.

Another welcome feature uncovered by many of you in Android 2.2 is the ability to work in apps through 270 degrees of rotation. That is, if you turn the phone to the landscape position to the left, it’ll rotate. And it’ll rotate to the right now, as well.

But, wait, there’s more. The car app has gotten smarter. So when you’re using the car dock and need to pull up a contact, you don’t have to turn the phone back to portrait (or worse, tilt your head) just to find whom you’re looking for. We’d prefer that the home screen rotate, too, but custom Froyo ROMs will take care of that soon enough.

(Thanks, Mike B! Though try to turn your caps lock off, m’kay? :) Find a cool new feature in Froyo and want to tell the world about it? E-mail us here and we’ll make you famous!)

vcf cards in froyo

Here’s a great find that comes to us from Emlil at androidscoop. Froyo now gives users the ability to import .vcf cards into contacts.  Even better, it looks like Froyo can handle the .vcf files right from the e-mail application as well as Gmail.  Emlil gives a nice walkthrough of
the process using the Gmail application, and we’ve attached a few pics of doing it through the regular pop mail app.

Also very cool is the ability to share contacts as .vcf files.  Again, Emlil walks us through doing it via Gmail, so we grabbed a few snaps of doing it over bluetooth.  Business users as well as those of us with big address books will surely find a use for this one.

Jump past the break to see some more pics and a short breakdown.

Not everything in Android 2.2 is hardcore behind-the-scenes stuff.  Some of it is a bit fluffy.  Butt-kicking-cool useless fluff though, so it’s all good.  Mix up one part fluff and one part function and you have the new 3D gallery and camera apps.  Like so much other stuff in Froyo, some of the changes seem very useful, while others completely random.  Hit the jump to get the run down, some handy pictures, and a video of something fun called pinch peek.
