GetJar announced their latest Android app endeavor today, GetJar Gold, a business model which sets a bunch of premium apps free. Games and apps which normally retail for as much as $10 each will now be free through the program and available through the GetJar mobile app. A number of popular titles can already be found in GetJar Gold, including Age of Zombies, TuneIn Radio Pro, Solo, Paper Glider and Backbreaker. According to the mobile client, these apps will updated on a weekly basis as opposed to Amazon’s daily deal.

GetJar currently boasts 30 million active monthly users and promises developers will be happy with the terms of the service. According to the press release (below), developers are paid on a per-install basis and receive substantially increased exposure.

GETJAR GOLD:  WHERE PAID APPS ARE FREE EVERY DAY

GetJar brings premium, full-version applications to Android users for free

SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept. 8, 2011 – GetJar, the world’s largest free app store, has introduced GetJar Gold, a program that gives consumers free ongoing access to premium applications that they would have to pay for on other app stores.

The same premium Android apps that cost up to $10 on Android Market or Amazon App Store are offered free as part of GetJar Gold. New premium apps are added to GetJar Gold every day and remain on the store. All apps are available for download at no cost, saving consumers potentially hundreds of dollars over time. With 30 million active monthly users, GetJar is set to give away millions of dollars worth of apps.

GetJar carefully selects only the best apps for theprogram from popular categories like games, entertainment, and productivity.  Titles currently available for free through GetJar Gold include Age of Zombies, TuneIn Radio Pro, Solo, Paper Glider and Splashtop Remote Desktop.

“We think this is something great that GetJar is doing and we’re excited to be a part of it,” said TuneIn Radio CEO Bill Moore.  “The industry has realized that what consumers want are premium apps without cost, but how to make it sustainable has been the big question.  GetJar has developed a business model to make free apps work.”

GetJar Gold works for everyone; consumers receive premium applications for free, developers are compensated, and advertisers enjoy the increased site traffic generated by the program. GetJar pays developers on a per-install basis, and gives them more exposure since free applications are downloaded 10 to 20 times more often than paid apps.

“We are able to develop programs like GetJar Gold because of our open and free business model,” said Ilja Laurs, CEO and Founder of GetJar.  “We regret that at this time we cannot extend our program to iPhone users, as Apple runs a closed ecosystem that does not allow for competing app distributors like GetJar. Unfortunately, iPhone users will have to continue paying for the very same apps that their Android counterparts enjoy for free.”

Haptify has announced today that their first Android game, Enzo’s Pinball, is now available in the Android Market. Touted as the “first virtual pinball title ever to include full-fledged tactile feedback”, the game lets users choose between three completely unique pinball tables. Enzo’s Pinball is also part of the OpenFeint network of games meaning it lets players compete against other Android and iOS competitors with leaderboards and unlockable achievements. We spent a few minutes playing with this on the XOOM and found it to be a rather enjoyable experience.

The three pinball tables and their features:

  • Clockwork Table: avoid getting wound up by an intricate clockwork mechanism dating back to the 18th century and learn the secret of the clockwork pinball
  • Steam-Powered Table: stay cool under pressure and navigate a high-voltage playing field to unlock the true nature of the steampunk pinball
  • DJ Table: listen to the dark secrets of the record pinball

Enzo’s Pinball costs $1.49 and works on all Android devices running 1.5 or higher.

“Enzo’s Pinball is an ideal choice for our first title, because it really showcases the subtle-yet-significant power of haptics in gaming,” said Craig Vachon, Haptify Lead. “When you play pinball in real life, you use a combination of sight, sound and touch to interact with the machine. Cutting that down to two senses, as most pinball titles do by necessity, just doesn’t provide the same level of involvement. I am positive that players won’t look at other pinball titles the same way after they’ve experienced Enzo’s Pinball with haptics.”

The guys over at Phandroid got their hands on some pretty great information for you Verizon customers.  It seems from their April roadmap, that Verizon is truly falling in love with Android.

As you can see from the picture, as early as the 7th of April, we’ll start seeing some new things coming out (please note, that as the roadmap says, these dates are subject to change). Throughout the month of April, Verizon customers can share in the Android love. In May, it’s an Android extravaganza with four 4G devices slated for release.

Sounds like some good stuff heading Verizon’s way–doesn’t it?  Hopefully, we won’t run into issues that cause these dates to be pushed back. Either way, it seems that Verizon hasn’t forgotten about their top-selling platform, even with their latest addition to the Verizon family.

So you want to know when all those shiny 4G LTE handsets are actually launching on Verizon? A friendly neighborhood tipster has sent along Verizon’s upcoming roadmap for their Spring releases, and it’s chock full of Android. For starters, the Samsung 4G LTE phone we had believed would go under the Stealth name is once again confirmed as the Charge (though Droid Charge will be the final name) and pegged with a release date of April 7th. Also planned to launch on the same day is the rugged Casio Commando, which was shown off at CTIA to little excitement. Jump forward a week to April 14th and we have the release of the highly anticipated Sony Ericsson Xperia Play gaming smartphone. If that wasn’t enough Android goodness for April already, expect the HTC Droid Incredible right around the end of the month on the 28th.

Moving out of April, May should see its share of Android, as well. May 5th is given as the day we can expect the the 4G LTE LG Revolution , and the Motorola DROID BIONIC is loosely listed with a May release, as well. Also without certain dates but listed as launching in May (or later) are the Motorola Droid X 2 and, get this, the Samsung Galaxy S II. I don’t think we expected the US launch of the Galaxy S followup to come so soon, but Verizon is suggesting it might be so (unless they are simply suggesting the launch will come after May).

Whew, that was a lot. Did you take all that in? Verizon has a big couple of months ahead of them. Let’s just hope another Thunderbolt fiasco doesn’t push back these dates further than they need to go.

[Thanks, Thomas!]
