Those of you following the NFC space and Google  Wallet stories of late will recall that Google recently decided to temporarily pull down/shelve the Prepaid Card feature.  Things look to be ramping back up with word that Google is sending out emails to Wallet users to advise that Prepaid option has returned.  To help make amends, Google is even tossing in a cool $5 for the problems.  This amount will be in your account, in addition to any monies that you had the last time you were able to use it.

Here’s a copy of the email that’s currently being sent to Google Wallet users.

Hello,

As you may have experienced over the last few weeks, we temporarily disabled the feature to add the Google Prepaid Card back to your wallet if you previously removed the card or reset your wallet. We temporarily disabled this feature to ensure the security of our Wallet customers. We recognize this may have been an inconvenience for you, and we did not make this decision lightly.

We are happy to announce that you can now add the Google Prepaid Card back to your wallet with the newest version of Google Wallet, and any funds that you previously had on the card should be restored, unless you contacted Money Network and asked for a refund of those funds. To add the Google Prepaid Card back, you will first need to update your Google Wallet application to the most recent version.

To compensate you for any inconvenience this may have caused, we have credited an additional $5 (five US dollars) to your Google Prepaid Card. If you have further questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at 855-492-5538.

Thank you for your continued support of Google Wallet, and we look forward to launching many new and exciting features for you to enjoy in the coming months.

Sincerely,
The Google Wallet Team

Vice president of Google Wallet and Payments, Osama Bedier, indicated this week that Sprint Nextel plans to expand Google Wallet support across “at least 10 additional phones” this, starting with the LG Viper.  Although Google is still in discussions with other carriers and hardware manufacturers, Sprint looks to be the premier partner for the next-generation commerce solution for the time being.

According to Bedier, there are tens of thousands of transaction terminal with Wallet support being added to the network on a monthly basis and that adoption is highest in convenience stores and fast food restaurants.  As of today there are twenty-two major retail chains set up to handle the NFC payment alternative, including Jamba Juice, American Eagle, OfficeMax and Foot Locker.

Things will certainly get interesting as the year unfolds as Isis comes to market with its NFC payment solution.  With AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile set to offer Isis transaction capability from a number of handset makers, it stands to reason that Google Wallet may be fighting an uphill battle by this time next year.  Will Sprint and Google be able to fend off a barrage of attacks from nearly every other angle?  And really, does it matter to Google in the end?

How would you like to be able to purchase a Coke or Butterfinger from a vending machine using your Android-powered smart phone?  What if you could easily alert the vending company that your bag of chips has become stuck on the way down?  What if you could suggest new items for restocking so that the office machine has a better selection, directly from your phone? Wheels are already in motion for this and much more, thanks to Google Wallet and Cantaloupe Systems.

Cantaloupe Systems is a San Francisco-based start-up that provides technology to vending machines and has been hard at work getting NFC payment terminals in units in the Bay Area, Chicago and other cities.  Once in place, consumers will be able to tap their smart phone against the terminal and pay for snacks and drinks.  What’s more, the technology also opens the door to rewards and offers from vendors who want you to consider their items.

Cantaloupe indicates that they have installed 6,000 NFC bezels thus far, but there are nearly 80,000 machines in their network.  Looking at the bigger picture, there are more than six million vending machines across the country.

The first signs of a nationwide rollout for Google Wallet have come in the form of a leaked internal RadioShack email. According to the screen shot passed to Engadget, The Shack is set to start accepting Google Wallet payments on September 1st.

We’re not really surprised to see RadioShack on the forefront of the new NFC-enabled payment as they were one of the first retail partners announced with the service. On the other hand, we were pleasantly caught off guard to learn that Google Wallet might be ready for its large-scale debut in just a matter of days.

The future of commerce was unveiled today as Google, FirstData, Sprint, Citi, and MasterCard announced Google Wallet.  Confirming many of the recent rumors, the service is rolling out across select markets later this summer (San Francisco, New York) on handsets that offer NFC (Nexus S 4G).  How it works is simple and awesome.  Users can tap their phone at a payment terminal and pull from a Citi Mastercard, loyalty cards, and take advantage of  special offers all in one fell swoop.  Don’t have a Citi MasterCard?  Use the pre-paid GCard which can be refilled from any other credit card out there.

Starting out, companies like American Eagle, Subway, Macy’s, Toys R Us, and Walgreens are on board as Google SingleTap merchants.  These are the types of places where one can pay, redeem offers, and earn loyalty credits with one swipe.  The catch?  This is all just a field test at this point and it may be a while before you see this come to your town.

Longer term, Wallet will be able to hold things like hotel keys, concert tickets, boarding passes, and more.  Receipts, confirmations, and other items can be generated and sent back to the device, keeping your pockets and purses clutter free.

Make sure you go to the Google Wallet site and check things out.  There’s plenty to read and learn as you wait for the service and app to come to your area.
