Toshiba is expected to unveil a new Android-powered tablet this week at IFA, according to a number of recent reports. NoteBookItalia uncovered (translate) a pair of images of the Honeycomb tablet although they were not able to pull any specifications. Looking at the pictures we can surmise a much sexier brushed metal design and a number of ports that include microSD, microUSB, and microHDMI output.

AndroidPolice was digging around the USPTO website where they discovered a potential name for the tablet, the Excite.  Considering Toshiba has also registered a number of domains related to the term excite, we’re inclined to believe the rumors.

If there was one thing we could say about the Toshiba Thrive it’s that the form factor is likely going to stand in the way of mass adoption.  For all the great stuff going on under the hood, it’s overshadowed by a clunky design.

Samsung has announced a number of new Galaxy smart phones ahead of the annual IFA conference set to take place in early September. As we learned just a few days back, Samsung has begun tacking on a “class designator” to let consumers know where the device falls in place in the grand scheme of things. The Galaxy S (Super Smart) is the top of the line, followed by Galaxy R (Royal / Refined) and so on. What’s more, Samsung also outlines the various Pro, Plus, and LTE suffixes so that users better understand the product.

The first new handsets to debut with the new naming scheme are the Galaxy W, Galaxy M Pro, Galaxy Y, and Galaxy Y Pro. We’ve outlined some of the bullet points of the Galaxy W, but we’ll have to wait until IFA to get the juicier details.  Galaxy W (Wonder)

  • Android 2.3
  • 1.4GHz Processor
  • HSDPA 14.4 Mbps connectivity
  • 3.7″ touch screen
  • Game Hub
  • Social Hub
  • Music Hub
  • Kies Air

Samsung introduces new GALAXY smartphone naming strategy, expands GALAXY smartphone range

SEOUL–(Korea Newswire) August 24, 2011 — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading mobile phone provider, today announced a new naming strategy for its GALAXY range of smartphones. The creation of the new naming system is marked by the release of four new GALAXY smartphone, the GALAXY W, GALAXY M Pro, GALAXY Y and GALAXY Y Pro, all of which run on the powerful Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating systems.

Samsung has created a new and simplified system of naming its smartphones, focused on its ever-expanding portfolio of industry-leading Android devices. The naming structure will organize and group all devices into five classes, identified by a single alphabetical letter. Devices will then be further designated by an additional indicator which will identify specific functionality.

“As Samsung continues to innovate, our goal is to provide consumers with an experience uniquely tailored to their needs. We have introduced steps to ensure users can simply identify the device designed to deliver the perfect experience for them,” said JK Shin, President and Head of Samsung’s Mobile Communications Business.

“In addition to this new naming strategy at IFA this year we unveiling the GALAXY W, GALAXY M Pro, GALAXY Y and GALAXY Y Pro – designed with the professional and social consumer in mind. These products further build on the phenomenal success we have enjoyed with the GALAXY range.”

New ways to identify your GALAXY Smartphones

According to the new naming structure, new class designators refer to the specific category that the smartphone product fits into, for example a premium device, or an entry-level device. All classes will be used within the higher branding of the ‘GALAXY’ smartphones.

  • “S” (Super Smart) – Devices at the very pinnacle of Samsung’s mobile portfolio. This class will only be used on flagship devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S, the award-winning smartphone that has already sold 10 million units throughout the world.
  • “R” (Royal / Refined) – Premium category models, a combination of power, performance and productivity for the individual who wants to be defined by the technology they carry.
  • “W” (Wonder) – High quality, strategic models, perfect for those seeking a balance between style and performance.
  • “M” (Magical) –High-performance models at an economic price-point.
  • “Y” (Young) – These are entry models or strategic models for emerging markets or a younger audience more sensitive to price.

Class indicators allow a more specific description of the key selling points of a device:

  • “Pro” – This indicates that the device includes a QWERTY keyboard for speedier email typing and increased productivity for professionals.
  • “Plus” – This indicates that the device is an upgrade from an existing model.
  • “LTE” – This indicates that the device is designed to utilize LTE (Long-Term Evolution) connectivity standards, a 4G standard to provide increased mobile network capacity and speed.

Samsung Mobile has dropped a new video on YouTube today which essentially amounts to a 30-second tease of things to come.  The company will be at IFA on September 1 where they’ll be announcing ’something big’.  The quick spot hearkens back to the original Galaxy S II clips (1,2) that Samsung used to hype the first GSII device.  Everyday users (actors) are seen walking around in a state of bliss thanks to a device we can’t quite make out.  But we already know what it is.

Our money is on 4G LTE version of the Galaxy S II with 4.5-inch display.  Why?  Because when we expanded the tags on the YouTube video we can see multiple references to 4G and LTE.  And as you know, this means faster not bigger.  So we’re guessing the bigger is in reference to the slightly larger display.  The original Galaxy S and its successor, the Galaxy S II, both feature 4-inch displays.  And thanks to phones like the Infuse 4G and upcoming Hercules, we know Samsung has plenty of 4.5-inch displays up their sleeves.

We’ll find out for sure come September 1, but we’re optimistic that this “Unpacked’ event is for a refreshed GS II.

You’ll also see a reference to an Android app called Unpacked which should be available to download from Samsung or the Market.  We’ve yet to come across it, so keep your eyes peeled!

We learned a few days ago that Samsung is planning to launch a new Android-powered device at the IFA 2011 which will feature a huge 5.3-inch display as well as other good features.  It appears that the rumor is becoming more legit as a new Samsung device has been added on T-Store Developer Center with the model number of SHV-E120S. So what exactly is SHV-E120S? The report shows that it comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Qualcomm MSM8250 (single-core), and it features a 720p HD display. At the moment, we don’t know about the size of display, but my guess is that this is the 5.3-inch display we were talking about. If you are thinking it’s a tablet, then we point to the fact that it’s running Gingerbread, not Honeycomb.  Every tablet Samsung has announced since the first Galaxy Tab has been listed with Honeycomb so this is probably a smartphone, albeit a huge one.  We’ll find out before long as Samsung clears the air at IFA 2011.

Is it a good idea for Samsung to offer a phone with a screen that large or will it end up in Dell Streak 5 territory? The comment box is waiting for you below, so leave your feedback.

If you got a chance to read our Xperia X10 review last week, you know that the one glaring problem that we found with an otherwise slick, sexy handset is the fact that is has shipped with Android 1.6 as the OS version.  We loved this handset after reviewing it; the battery life, the form factor and the quality of the build were spot on gorgeous, but we could not get around the fact that Sony decided to launch the unit with an outdated version of Android.  AT&T and Sony/Ericsson have both been promising that they will update the handset to 2.1 pretty quickly, but we have stopped holding our breath when it comes to carriers and OTA updates.

However, the video above shows the Xperia X10 at the recent IFA show in Germany running a build of 2.1, which the uploader of the video says he got from Sony Ericsson. The source of the vid also said that Xperia owners could be seeing the update in as little as 4 weeks!

we tell you this, if they indeed do start rolling 2.1 out to these devices, the X10 becomes a winner, and one of the nicer midrange Android handsets on the market.  We will keep you up to date as we hear more!

Archos 7

Archos brought no fewer than five models of its new "internet tablets" to IFA 2010: Archos 28, Archos 32, Archos 43, Archos 70, and Archos 10.1. We’re fond of pretty much all of them. They all run Android 2.2 Froyo and have a "light" skin that doesn’t get in the way too much. The larger ones rock a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor that doesn’t exactly make them sing, but definitely keeps up and along with some graphics acceleration makes display of 720p HD video a breeze.

One choice we’re not so sure about is the decision to toss the main Android buttons – Home, Menu, Search, and Back – into the screen itself instead of having them be dedicated hardware buttons. It means that for certain things – like watching video – you’re two taps away from what should really be a one-tap experience.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt

Google CEO and Chairman of the Board Eric Schmidt took the stage today in Berlin at IFA 2010 to deliver the closing keynote speech for the world’s largest consumer and electronics trade show.  Schmidt spoke about the new technology that Android offers, such as voice translation, voice search, and Google street view, noting that these types of technology used to be classed as ’science fiction’.  Schmidt also spoke about Google Chrome, and an excellent demo was shown.

Speaking of demos — GoogleTV’s official twitter account reminds us that there is a great demo of the upcoming GoogleTV product (due in the U.S. sometime this fall) that you can watch right here, as part of the full IFA 2010 keynote presentation (at about 32:00.

The full press release is after the break, where you can read how executive director of the IFA Jens Heithecker compares Schmidt to Einstein.  Yes, that Einstein.  [IFA@GoogleTV]

lg-optimus-one-chic-ifa-15-sm

Oh look, it’s the LH E720 that we saw last week going by the name of Optimus Chic. Aside from sounding like a cross-dressing robot in disguise, the Chic was part of a duo of low-end Android phones from LG announced back in July. The other device pictured and part of the same announcement is the LG Optimus One. Both handsets are looking to compete on pricing rather than all out power and features. Expect these to get priced in a range similar to the recently announced Huawei Ideos. The styling of these LG devices do achieve a slightly more refined, higher-end look, but don’t expect their internals to match the draping.
