While Phandroid wasn’t able to make an appearance at IFA and personally shmooze with device manufacturer’s as we fondled their goods, plenty of pals from around the Android community made their way to Berlin for the event and did a bang-up job of covering the many releases. Tablets seemed to be the hot topic at the event, specifically those running Android. Two slabs announced were the Toshiba Folio 100 and the Huawei Ideos S7, both of which seem to be getting shaky verdicts on the overall presentation of Android.

First up, the device with arguably less potential is the Huawei S7. SlashGear was on hand to take a spin with the thing, and took away an impression that the device may have been a stand-out tablet had it been released earlier in the year, but in the face of future tablets it probably doesn’t stack up.

And one of the tablets that will create a bit of a harder time for the S7 would be the Toshiba Folio 100, which boasts the sort of specs that could make you drool, though initial feedback has seen a version of Android not quite optimized or the 10.1-inch widescreen display. There is hope that may change as release draws near however. The tablet runs on the bigger side and lacks the portability of something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. You can check out Android Central’s full preview for more info on that.

And finally we will bring it back to Huawei for impressions of their entry-level Ideos handset also announced yesterday. This one provides a cheap and dirty pathway to Android 2.2 with surprsingly decent internals including a 2.8-inch QVGA display. 3.2MP camera, and the ability to act as a mobile hotspot. It should go for right around $150 off contract when it launches to numerous markets around the globe.

Bonus: Hands-on action with the recently announced line of ARCHOS Android tablets.

galaxy-player-50

While we are still waiting for Samsung to officially announce the Yp-MB2 portable media player that we have seen and heard of countless times, they were showing off an entirely different Android PM today at IFA. Lost mostly to the buzz surrounding the Galaxy Tab, the Samsung Galaxy Player 50 is an Android 2.1 device featuring a 3.2-inch screen, WiFi, and 8GB or 16GB of internal storage. A microSD slot allows for expandable memory up to 32GB.

The Galaxy Player 50 will feature DivX support, come with ThinkFree office bundled into the software, and provide access to Google services and the Android Market. Not too shabby if you are looking for a secondary media device, though no iteration of Android or UI skin has quite made music and video playback on Android its strong suit. The Galaxy Player 50 will be available in Europe this October for 229 Euros for the 8 gig version and 299 Euros for the 16 gig.

We can finally put the Galaxy Tab rumors to sleep.  Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy Tab earlier today at the IFA conference in Berlin, Germany.  Looking very much like a giant Galaxy S phone, the Tab features a 7-inch TFT-LCD, WSVGA (1024 x 600) display, Cortex A8 1.0GHz processor, 3-megapixel camera with auto-focus and LED flash and a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera for video telephony. The tablet runs Android 2.2 and offers full Flash 10.1 support, which should like great on a device this size. Other hardware details include 3G HSPA connectivity, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 3.0 support. Look for the Galaxy Tab to start rolling out in Europe later this month while U.S., Asian, Koreans markets are expected to see theirs in the coming months. (Full press release and additional pictures after the break).

The picture is getting clearer around Viewsonic’s 7-inch tablet, the ViewPad 7.  Recently, the tablet has been confirmed to feature front and rear-facing cameras, a 3.5mm headphone jack, mini USB, a microphone, and support for 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS.  The picture you see above is a rendering of the device, but does show a right hand strip of buttons which have become all too familiar to Android users.  We expect to get pricing and availability details this week at the IFA conference in Germany.

supernova

There is something to be said for glasses-free 3D. If anything is going to make the push towards 3D content jump out in the consumer market it is going to be a device like Nintendo’s 3DS that does not require the purchase of expensive and wonky glasses to produce three-dimensional imagery. So it was only a matter of time until a tablet picked up on the technology, and since it isn’t made by Apple, you guessed it, this tablet runs on Android.

Not much else can be gathered about the device that looks to be called the Supernova other than the 3D capabilities. Perhaps you’ll have better luck gathering info from the original Chinese-text article, which features video and also mentions the device may be based around a Rockchip CPU.

huawei-8150-b

Huawei is looking to bring Android 2.2 to the mid-range handset market, and will be announcing their upcoming U8150 (a phone that recently passed through the FCC) at this year’s IFA in Berlin. Known for their cheap to dirt-cheap Android smartphones, the U8150 looks to be no different offering a 2.8 -inch capacitive touchscreen, 528 MHz processor, and 3.2MP camera. Huawei isn’t known for their huge presence in the US, but they have been doing a nice job carving out a space for themselves in emerging markets and with consumers looking for a low-priced but still feature packed phone.

We have recently seen Huawei start to show up in more places, so chances are this Froyo-clad phone could make its way to a larger distribution. GCF and FCC documentation suggest we should see it in Europe and the States at some point. No word on exact release date or pricing as of yet, but expect this one to fall pretty low on the pricing spectrum.

As we head into next week’s IFA, we’re getting the sense that Android may grab a decent share of headlines.  We just mentioned that Archos will be in attendance, showing off their upcoming product line and now it’s Toshiba time.  Look for the electronics giant to debut their 10-inch Android tablet, the Smartpad.

Italian website Notebook Italia has posted (translated) a few images of the device ahead of the conference, showing us a sexy black surface, rounded eges, and a sleek metal frame. Last week we reported about a rumor that Toshiba will unleash a 10-inch Android Tablet.   It’s possible to discern four buttons on the right side, a webcam, speakers, and ports for both USB and HDMI output.  The latest gossip around this guy is that he’ll have a Tegra 2 chispet under the hood when it’s launched.  September 3rd cannot get here quick enough!

My question to you guys is this: Does Toshiba have what it takes to step into the ring with the iPad?  If not them, who?

Those who follow the Android universe closely already know that Archos has a few new tablets up their sleeves. However, your average Joe doesn’t have a clue as to what is on the radar. At next month’s IFA (think CES for the UK), everyday consumers will get a glimpse at five new Android-powered devices coming from the French electronics maker. Expect to see new tablets ranging from 2.8 to 10-inches, in addition to the current Archos 7 and Archos 8 Home Tablets. Among the rumored units are the Archos 32 and 2.8-inch media player which have been seeing some recent coverage.

“The company will showcase five brand new Internet Tablets ranging touch screen from 2.8 to 10 inches featuring computing, communications and apps with the power of Android plus Archos’ legendary video quality will be shown for the first time. – Archos

ViewSonic’s most recent tablet plans look to bring a slate that lets you have your cake and eat it too with a new 10-inch design that will dual-boot Android and Windows. No other information on the device has been released, but the company will be showcasing the new tab at September’s IFA. While ViewSonic hasn’t been known for high-caliber portable devices, the idea of getting two for one with your operating systems well makes up for any less than stellar hardware. If it looks anything like the below-pictured 7-inch GSM Android tablet slated for the fall, we won’t be disappointed in the aesthetics, at least.

viewsonictablet

The dual-boot concept isn’t exactly new, but there has yet to be a truly awesome device that offered the feature. I hold reservations to the idea that ViewSonic would be the company to change that. Give me a dual-booting Android and OS X tablet, and then we are talking. Yeah, I’d like to see that happen.
