If you happen to use the Opera Mobile browser for Android you’ll be happy to know it’s been updated and fixes quite a few issues. For those of you not familiar with Opera Mobile, it is an alternative browser that Android users can download for free from the Android Market, and while I don’t personally use it, some would say it has its benefits. You’re going to want to grab this update as it takes care of a security loophole and adds some extra support for those of you using a Honeycomb device. Here’s what’s new in the Opera Mobile 11.1 update:

  • Added support for Honeycomb large screen compatibility mode
  • Added support for font styles on Samsung Galaxy devices
  • Fix for black screen when starting Opera Mobile on some devices
  • Fix for problem with text disappearing in text fields
  • Fix for HTML5 tag auto-play
  • Fix for mismatched RGB colors on some devices
  • Fix for various stability issues on certain devices
  • Fix for various font issues on certain devices
  • Fix for security issue: http://bit.ly/android-11-1-update-2

Apparently a lot of users who want to download Opera Mobile have some anxiety over the applications various permissions. If you haven’t already downloaded Opera Mobile and are concerned about the various permissions, I suggest checking out the Opera forums where they detail what each permission is for and why they ask for it.

If you’re looking for the update or want to try out Opera Mobile for Android just follow the Market link below.

It may seem a bit late, but HTC has kept their word, and the T-Mobile Sensation 4G’s bootloader can now be unlocked. HTC first promised the update back in July, after announcing they would no longer be locking bootloaders. We discovered that it would be at least mid-August before HTC devices in the States got the update, which infuriated quite a few Sensation 4G and Evo 3D owners. At long last, Sensation 4G users can get their bootloaders unlocked through HTCDev.com.

Before you jump into unlocking your Sensation, we should mention that the process isn’t for the novice Android user. It requires ADB knowledge, which isn’t exactly for the faint of heart. But if you’re feeling brave, you can head on over to the bootloader unlocking page and give it a shot for yourself.

Has anyone unlocked their bootloader yet? How difficult was it? Leave a comment below!

Samsung hopes to compete with RIM’s BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) with the announcement of their newest service, ChatON. ChatON, which is expected to launch in September, will be showcased at IFA this week.

It is an interesting launch for Samsung, mainly because it will support a variety of mobile operating systems, including Samsung’s own Bada OS, Android, feature phones, and even competitors’ platforms, such as iOS and BlackBerry (Unlike BBM or iMessage).

Along with supporting mobile chat, ChatON will offer a web-based client that allows users to chat from their PCs as well. Users can have private 1-to-1 conversations or participate in group chats. ChatOn also supports sharing media, like photos, videos, voice messages, and contacts.

Click here to view the embedded video.

On feature phones, the service allows for text, images, calendar appointments, and contact sharing. But on smartphones, users will have a few extra options, such as the ability to comment on friends’ profiles, send multimedia messages that combine text and audio, and view their own “Interaction Rank,” which displays how active they are on the ChatOn network.

ChatON will go live next month in over 120 countries and 62 languages.

I’m personally excited for this service, because I would like to see how well it works in comparison to WhatsApp and other free messaging apps.

It’s nice to see the carriers come together for a good cause every now and then. If you haven’t watched the news lately, Hurricane Irene is set to hit the southeastern part of the States, namely in South and North Carolina, and Virginia. We’ve already learned that T-Mobile is doing their part, as they’ve sent crisis resources and teams to the areas that may be affected. FEMA has also released a preparedness app, and now it appears that Sprint wants to help as well. They’ve deployed teams up and down the eastern seaboard, to prepare for power outages, flooding, and other disasters. As the saying goes, “better safe than sorry.”

So are any of our readers residing in the eastern area? What precautions are you taking for the hurricane? Leave a comment below!

We’re only a few days away from getting our first official looks at Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy S II photos so we’re not surprised to see these types of leaks coming at the last moment.  The image you are looking at above is said to be the AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile versions of the flagship phone, posing together for a class picture.  Samsung was originally expected to unveil the Galaxy S II devices on Monday. August 29th, however the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene has pushed things back by one day.  We’ve waited long enough, so what’s one more day?

In an effort to prepare for the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene, T-Mobile has begun bulking up their network along the coastal states.  Bringing in battery backup devices,  generators, radio equipment and a host of other tools, T-Mobile is working with a number of state and national offices to help ensure customers don’t run into problems.  What’s more, they are offering up a handful of tips and reminders for subscribers to keep in mind over the next few days.  Hit the break to see what the carrier has been doing to get ready and also learn how you can help to keep networks running smoothly.

T-Mobile Preps Storm Response Ahead of Irene; Issues Tips for Customers

As forecasters continue to issue advisories for Hurricane Irene, we at T-Mobile are rapidly deploying engineering and crisis resources to locations across the Eastern seaboard that are in the current trajectory path.

Our first concern is for our customers. That means that through all situations we will do our best to quickly resolve any outages. We have established a number of local Command Centers up and down the coast where our teams of engineers will rapidly move to fix any outages in service.

In addition, we have deployed network, technology and people resources throughout the Carolinas, Greater Tri-State Area and New England, including:

  • Portable and backup generators, staged and topped off with fuel;
  • Repair and transport vehicles ready to go;
  • Battery backup at all of our critical sites;
  • Microwave radio equipment in case land lines serving our cell sites fail;
  • Engineers on call in neighboring areas to the storm’s path; and
  • Cells-On-Wheels (COWs) pre-staged to move in and provide additional wireless capacity in hard-hit areas.

Over the next few days, T-Mobile will also be coordinating with local, state and national offices to monitor evacuation efforts and routes and will take steps to increase wireless capacity in those areas

Tips for Customers

Through all of these efforts, customer safety remains a critical concern. During mass calling events, such as this week’s earthquake in Virginia, and potentially with this storm, we recommend that customers take the following steps:

  • Use text messaging to communicate instead of voice calls. Text messaging has a greater success rate in getting through the network during high-usage periods.
  • Keep your calls short in duration.
  • Utilize Wi-Fi calling if your device has the feature. This feature takes advantage of your in-home data connection to place calls in case the cellular network is congested or down.
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged prior to the storm. Consider obtaining a vehicle charger in the event of power loss.
