This is a neat extension to the Best Buy trade-in program which will be extended with a little special treatment for people wanting to purchase a new Motorola Android device. Beginning April 8,  Best Buy customers will be able to save $50 on select Motorola smartphones across major carriers. All you have to do is trade-in any mobile phone at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores.

The idea is to trade-in your old phone while purchasing a new Motorola phone. They will give you the value of your phone, which will get you up to $50 off a new Motorola smartphone and a Best Buy gift card which equals the value of your old phone. Say you get $50 off the new phone and $100 gift card to Best Buy, that sounds great to me.

This offer to save $50 is available on three of the top award-winning Motorola smartphones, two year activation required:

In addition to this exclusive Motorola smartphone savings offer, customers can save $50 on any Sprint phone with 2-year activation and receive up to a $50 Best Buy Gift Card when they trade in their Sprint HTC EVO 4G.

A new Motorola handset found its way onto the internet yesterday and reports peg this unannounced smartphone as the Droid Fighter. Expected to hit Verizon in mid-April, the device looks to continue the familiar form factor employed by the Droid Razr, only larger. The picture points a Verizon-branded phone with a 4.6-inch 720p HD display and software-based buttons a la the Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately that’s all we have to go on at this point; the rest of the specs are still unknown.

With a name like Droid Fighter we would assume that we’re getting next-generation hardware and software but we cannot say for certain. We’d like to see Android 4.0 with minimal Motorola influence, 16GB storage, a high-end dual-core or quad-core chipset, and one of those crazy batteries found in the Droid Razr Maxx.

Given there’s around one month to go before the phone hits Verizon we may expect to see the full specs leak out in short order.

What do you think of Motorola’s next Android device?  Too big for you or are you a fan of the 4.5-inch – 5.0-inch stuff?

I remember when Swype was the biggest thing to hit the market. Everyone was so used to simple single-letter typing that the concept blew us all away at first. Swype was a closed beta for awhile, and everyone scrambled to sign up for it. Even when it was released to the public, Swype was a fairly big commodity. Personally, I was excited as well. At the time, I had never heard of such a concept, and I couldn’t wait to try it out. I was lucky enough to be a part of the closed beta, and I couldn’t put my trusty G1 down when I finally got that precious APK  file installed.

Swype brought new life to touchscreen typing for me, even if it was full of bugs. I didn’t care. Most first releases are rough drafts, and it was called a “beta” group for a reason. I was never truly appeased with the accuracy of Swype, and I used it on and off for the next year or so before eventually fell out of love with it. I jumped from keyboard to keyboard, never truly satisfied. I found some solace with Thumb Keyboard, but I knew I would never be able to type as quickly as I did with Swype.

Then, something happened that I now consider to be fate: I had the chance to review the Droid Razr Maxx. After powering up the device for the first time, and going through the setup process, I was curious about what input methods Motorola had given users. So, I jumped into a text box, and after a good old fashioned long press, and a quick tap of Input Methods, there she sat. My old flame, you could say.

In my review, I mentioned that I was never a huge fan of Swype (which is partially true), so I used the Motorola keyboard instead. After being contacted by a Swype rep, I had a sudden “what the hell?” moment, and downloaded the Swype installer for my G2X. It’d been a little over a year since I’d used the keyboard, so there must have been some changes to improve it, right? I started using Swype as my daily input method, and I have to admit, it brought back a few memories.

Was I impressed? With a technology like this, it’s hard not to be. I wasn’t blown away by the slight improvements that Swype had seen since our last encounter, but I was pleased. I used Swype for the next week, and didn’t have to switch to a normal keyboard once. Accuracy seemed much improved, and I even went to the trouble of adjusting the settings, so that accuracy got more attention than speed.

I noticed that virtually nothing has changed in terms of appearance for Swype, but that familiar draw-to-type motion is still as smooth as the day I first installed it those many moons ago. After just over a week of usage, I can firmly say that Swype and I have made up, and I’ll be using it as my daily input method for some time to come. I’m quite satisfied with the accuracy, and I’m definitely typing more quickly.

It’s as if I’m back in early 2011, the last time that I used Swype. But this time, it’s better. This time, I’m not jumping to another keyboard. This time, Swype is here to stay.

My week with Swype: the end of my search for the perfect keyboard originally appeared on AndroidGuys.

Motorola recently adjusted their Android 4.0 update timeline for a number of smartphones and tablets.  Of particular note this time around is that, come the second quarter, the Ice Cream Sandwich update will hit every version of the Razr save for the U.S. model.  Yep – that means that Europe, Africa, Latin America, Korea, Japan… everywhere else but stateside.  Our Verizon-branded model is still in the “evaluation and planning” stage.  The same still goes for the Droid 4, Droid Razr Maxx, and a number of other smartphones.

PHASE 1 – EVALUATION & PLANNING: During this phase, we evaluate the benefits, technical issues and user experience of an upgrade. Generally, we are not able to provide release dates in this stage. There are also some cases in which we can state that an upgrade will happen but are not able to provide a release date. Please note that some products that enter the Evaluation and Planning phase may not complete the upgrade cycle.

Keep in mind that things are always subject to change and that timelines will vary, depending on how a carrier plays ball with Motorola.  We’re bummed for sure, but at least they didn’t scrap it altogether.  Yet.

Respect knuckles to Dale for the heads up.

Motorola today announced that the Bluetooth-connected, Android-powered, Dick Tracy-esque watch that is the MOTOACTV will be on sale in the UK starting December.  For a suggest price of £249.99, consumers will be able to pick up the device, a wrist strap, a clip, the SF200 sports headset (wired), and all the accompanying cables and chargers. While you are at it, an additional £39.99 will score an arm band, wall charger, and bike mount.  Go ahead, splurge a little.  You were good this year!

For those not up to speed on the MOTOACTV, the device can sync across many of Motorola’s newer smartphones, track worksouts, play music and more.  One of our favorite features is that it learns what music motivates you so that the next time you are trudging along and need a boost it will automatically kick in the Rocky 5 soundtrack.

Motorola Mobility recently announced third-quarter 2011 financial results, posting net revenues of $3.3 billion, up 11 percent from third quarter 2010. Mobile device revenue came in at $2.4 billion, up 20 percent from Q3 of last year. Motorola smartphones have been flying off shelves, with 4.8 million smartphones shipped in Q3 of 2011, up 1 million from Q3 of last year. On the flip side, Motorola’s XOOM tablet hasn’t been doing so well, with only 100,000 XOOM’s shipped in Q3 (apple ships that many iPads a day). There’s also a few tidbits in there about the Motorola/Google merger, with around 18 million in expenses going towards the merger, which will seek stockholder approval on November 17th. The merger will also require antitrust clearances in the U.S., by the European Commission, and in Canada, China, Israel, Russia, Taiwan and Turkey.

Overall, Motorola seems to be doing just fine with their Android smartphones, and with the upcoming RAZR sales, I’m sure that trend will continue. Let’s just hope Motorola figures out the sweet spot (price) on the tablet front, to allow for a better Q3 next year. Hit the link below for more information on Motorola’s Q3 financial results.

Motorola is known as one of the leading mobile phone manufacturers in the world and they recently launched several new Android devices. The Droid RAZR is their latest and greatest soon-to-be launched Android phone but now it seems they’re already prepping for the next big thing. Remember when we told you about the Droid 4? Well, back then it was just a rumor and the phone was codenamed the ‘Maserati.’ Our friends over at Droid-Life were lucky enough to get their hands on a few shots of the Droid 4 and no doubt the phone looks cool. It comes with the same design as the RAZR as you can see from the edgy corners, but it’s also rocking the iconic DROID slide-out keyboard as well. Unfortunately, Motorola is not offering a free Maserati with the Droid 4, but it does comes with a lot of great features. Have a look:

  • 4? screen (assuming Super AMOLED Advanced)
  • Full 5-row “illuminated” keyboard
  • RAZR styling
  • 4G LTE
  • Non-removable battery
  • Android 2.3.5
  • 1080p video recording (assuming 8MP)
  • Front camera
  • HDMI out
  • MotoACTV syncing

I am satisfied with the specs and I am sure this one will rock the show, but what’s confusing me is that it’s on Gingerbread. With Android 4.0 coming out soon and the whole Motorola/Google thing, you’d expect the next gen. DROID to have ICS. There’s no word on a release date but perhaps Motorola and Verizon will launch it sometime around the holidays. Also, there’s no information on the processor speed and model, but rumors put it at a 1.5 GHz dual-core OMAP processor. Anyway, let’s wait for the final words from Motorola.

So who’s looking forward to grabbing the Droid 4 later this year, or would you rather wait for a device with ICS pre-installed?

As an Android fanboy, I believe that I am not the only one excited about Ice Cream Sandwich and I am really waiting for the Galaxy Nexus as most of you are, but… I’m sure not everyone is going to sell their Droid Bionic or SGSII just to buy the Galaxy Nexus. Most of you will instead patiently await an ICS update to your device. Motorola recently told us that the Motorola XOOM will receive the ICS update soon, whereas the Droid RAZR will get it in 2012, but what about the other Motorola phones running on Gingerbread e.g. Droid Bionic, Droid 3 etc? Motorola also announced via Twitter that they will launch an ICS update schedule six weeks after Google’s public push of ICS, which means we will see ICS running on Motorola’s latest Android devices soon. I hope Motorola has a few new ICS devices up their sleeves as well.

The first ICS device will be hitting Verizon in the next month or so and hopefully we will see ICS devices from other manufacturers soon. So folks, do you currently own a Motorola device that you’re hoping will see ICS? Planning on buying one? Let us know in the comment box below.

Motorola has confirmed that their Honeycomb-powered Android tablet, the XOOM, will see Ice Cream Sandwich.  Without identifying a specific time frame or additional details, Matt (forums manager) does indicate that the company will issue Android 4.0 to the 10.-1inch tablet.  Considering the hardware hasn’t evolved too fast for Android tablets, there’s a good chance that a lower price point and newer OS could kick start some sales.

More appealing?

Would you consider picking up a Motorola XOOM if it had Ice Cream Sandwich?  Why or why not?

Thanks for the heads up, Antoids!

You may or may not be disappointed with the Motorola RAZR after the Galaxy Nexus announcement but Motorola still thinks you should buy it. In fact, if you live in the UK you’ll be able to buy it starting in November for a price of £455 ($720 that includes VAT). No, that’s not cheap, but from what we’ve heard it kind of delivers the performance expected for that price. So, what do you think? Is the RAZR the coolest phone you’ve ever seen or a letdown given yesterday’s Galaxy Nexus announcement? Leave a comment below or post something on our Facebook wall.
