So apparently Motorola did some secret focus group poll thingy and came up with the bright idea of packaging kid-centric content into a $500 device and calling it the “Motorola XOOM Family Edition.” What a brilliant idea (insert sarcasm). Most of us parents are out shopping for tech products made by Playschool because they’re indestructible, and here comes Motorola with the idea that what parents really want, is to hand over a $500 dollar easily-destructible device to their children. Talk about polar opposites!

Anyways, the Motorola XOOM Family Edition will be hitting stores soon and includes exclusive content from Kid Mode by Zoodles along with $40 worth of pre-loaded apps like Asphalt 6 by Gameloft. So really all this is, is a Motorola XOOM packaged with a bunch of apps that Motorola feels you will want. I feel like they just aren’t listening. The only thing we want — is a lower price. Who knows, maybe I’m way off on this one. What do you guys think? Is this a scatterbrained idea or something neat and marketable? I’d love to hear your opinions on this one so please leave a comment below.

No, you’re not having a flashback to 2005. Rumor has it that Motorola is working to bring back one of the most popular phones of its time, the RAZR. Obviously it was phased out by newer devices with different operating systems, so they’d have to make a few changes. The photo above was supposedly taken with the Motorola Slimline, a device that was leaked during that Moto site redesign a few months ago. As you can tell, the photo isn’t exactly HD quality, so it’s possible that this whole thing is a farce. The RAZR was known for its slim profile, which leads us to believe that Moto could be working on a thin Android device, hence the Slimline name.

Motorola may also rebrand the device as the Droid RAZR, which obviously puts it on Verizon’s network. Now, we haven’t heard any more about the Slimline, and as mentioned, the photo may have been fabricated along with this whole story. For now, we advise you to take this with a grain of salt until more information is uncovered.

So if the rumors are true, what do you think about Motorola’s attempt to bring back the RAZR? Would you buy the Slimline? Sound off in the comments below!

A tweet from the Official Motorola Droid Bionic Twitter account has confirmed yesterday that September 8th will be the release date for the long-awaited handset.  Of course we’ll likely get a full-on press announcement in the next few days as Motorola and Verizon really want to make sure this thing succeeds.  A simple tweet is not enough to get the hype machine rolling so we look for Big Red to issue something in the next couple of days.  Given we’re already seeing advertisements online for the Bionic, we’re expecting a huge push for the phone.

According to an e-mail received by a Droid Life reader, Motorola is to begin the upgrade process within the next week. As long as you’re a business or government customer that is. According to the e-mail, Motorola is piloting the upgrade process before rolling out to the rest of its customers.

Initially it was believed that users would be sending their device back to Verizon for the upgrade. But it appears that business and government users at least, will be sending theirs back to Motorola. Verizon first warned users they would be without their tablets for 6 days, but Motorola is promising a turn around of 3 days, at least for the pilot program.

Those sending back their device for the upgrade are advised to back up their data and either encrypt the information on it or reset it back to factory state. People who have registered for the upgrade will receive packaging and shipping material from Moto so it won’t cost a thing.

Now if only the UK had 4G networks so I could get the upgrade for mine when the time comes. For you US Xoom owners out there, register on the Motorola website to be notified when you’re eligible for the upgrade.

Full press release follows.

SouthernLINC Wireless Rolls Out Motorola TITANIUM, the newest Android-powered Push To Talk Smartphone for iDEN

ATLANTA – Aug. 25, 2011 – Motorola TITANIUM™, the newest Android™-powered smartphone with Push To Talk for the Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN), is now available from SouthernLINC Wireless, a Southern Company (NYSE: SO).

Using Motorola’s iDEN technology that offers immediate, private communications, SouthernLINC Wireless combines Push To Talk two-way radio, cellular service, mobile Web access, and text and picture messaging into one, hand-held device.

The new Motorola TITANIUM is a slim, tablet-style smartphone that unites the interactivity of a 3.1-inch HVGA touch screen with the functionality of a full QWERTY keyboard. Plus, it gives users immediate private or GroupTALK™ Push To Talk two-way radio communications capabilities, so they can connect with one or many people at the push of a button. Moreover, Motorola TITANIUM synchs email, calendars and contacts from Gmail™ and Google Calendar™, Microsoft® Exchange, POP3 or IMAP, keeping active users connected to both personal and business accounts.

“And, when a text or email just won’t do, don’t let a noisy location keep you from making that phone call,” continued Johnson. “Motorola TITANIUM’s dual microphones cancel noise and optimize audio on voice calls, so you can be heard.”

In addition, the rugged Motorola TITANIUM is designed to meet Military Specification 810G for dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, low pressure and solar radiation, giving users reliability and durability in some of the harshest environments.

According to leading market research company “The NPD Group,” Android continues to dominate US smartphone market share. They say Android accounts for a whopping 52% of units sold in Q2 2011, iOS also gained a slight quarterly rise to 29% but BBOS fell to 11% with Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile, and WebOS holding steady at less than 5% each. Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for NPD, had this to say on Google’s acquisition of Moto:

Google’s acquisition of Motorola shifts the balance of power in the handset-patent conflict between Google and its operating system competitors.

Android’s momentum has made for a large pie that is attractive to Motorola’s Android rivals, even if they must compete with their operating system developer.

Motorola’s phone and smartphone market share plus their year-over-year unit share have all declined over the past year as Samsung and LG experienced substantial gains. Rubin likens this to the feature phone market when Motorola introduced the RAZR and says having closer ties to Android will “help inspire new paths to differentiation.”

Also noted is the increase in potential for prepaid smartphones. In Q2 2010 just 8% of smartphones were prepaid, cut to Q2 2011 and that number has increased to 22%. The prepaid market was once a key area for Motorola and with Android leading the charge, Motorola now has a chance to reclaim this revitalized market while prepaid carriers continue building up their smartphone portfolios.
