Looking for something cool but not overly useful to do with your Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1? Might as well check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9" retail mode that has been loaded onto it since Samsung saw fit to leave it on there. As you can tell from the video above, it’s as you would expect — just a demo video of what the device is capable of in addition to showing off the new TouchWiz UI. Here is how you can do it:

  • Update your Galaxy Tab if you haven’t
  • Go to Categories > Utilities
  • Install the 8.9" retail mode app
  • Launch the app, press OK and then enter the password 5444
  • Check the "Service Enable"  box — it will be on a new screen, and then press the lock button.
  • Demo will start shortly.

That’s it. Sit back and enjoy the video and know you’ll soon be getting the new TouchWiz UI you see before you.

Thanks, Will!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Overclocked

Those of you who’ve picked up Samsung’s recently released Galaxy Tab 10.1 may be interested to know there’s now a kernel available overclocking its Tegra 2 processor to 1.4GHz.  This kernel uses the 2.6.36.4 base, BFQ I/O scheduler, and increases the voltages to supply more power required for the overclock.  You’ll want to keep in mind this is a preview kernel so use caution when speeding up your Tab 10.1.  As always, root is required to flash a custom kernel.  Hit the source to delve further into the details.

These ladies are smiling for a very good reason, and yes it has to do with the awesome tech toys they have in their hands from Samsung.

After the break you will find my video review of the newly released Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.  Long story short?  Run, don’t walk, to your local Best Buy to pick this up if you are in the market for a tablet.  This unit is one of the best that I have been privileged to use that is powered by Android.  Priced at $499 for the 16GB model, this Honeycomb powered bundle of awesomeness is the first tablet that I have seen that has gotten the pricing scheme right, and, if marketed right, will give the iPad a run for it’s money.  Check out the full report after the break.

Tab 10.1 boot screen

If you just picked up your shiny new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 today, you might want to reboot it.  It appears that some of the retail units are being shipped with a familiar bootsplash screen featuring the unlocked bootloader icon.  All models seem to be included, though early reports were all from the 32 GB Gray-backed edition.

Lots of people are looking at this, and so far there doesn’t appear to be an easy way to get to any fastboot mode to check exactly what is going on.  If the bootloaders really are unlocked, it’s a curse and a blessing — it means easy hacking, but it also may affect Google movie rentals.  Our own Menno has a unit with the unlocked icon, so we’ll be on top of the issue.  More when we know more.
