Sprint is completely done with releasing WiMAX 4G devices and is ready to move on to 4G LTE, according to new details hitting the wires today.  Speaking at Competitive Carriers Global Expo today, Sprint’s Bob Azzi confirmed that they would be solely focusing on LTE for future smartphones and tablets.

We learned earlier in the year that Sprint would be releasing more than one dozen 4G LTE products in 2012, including handsets, tablets, and data cards.  It was anticipated that at least some of the carrier’s products would include support for WiMAX however that’s all but officially put to rest.

As to where exactly Sprint will be deploying their LTE network over the next few months and years has not been fleshed out in a public light.  The carrier has announced a handful of select markets slated to pick up LTE but we don’t know where things will be in the long term.  A newly-leaked image hitting the internet today tells where Sprint hopes to be by the end of 2014 when everything is in place.  Looking at the picture we see plenty of coverage along the eastern half of the country, mixed with Sprint 4G LTE and roaming agreements across the western half.

Sprint has an event scheduled one week from today so we’re hoping the carrier gives some new details as it pertains to the 4G LTE plans.  Considering the EVO One is rumored to be a 4G LTE handset it stands to reason that Dan Hesse will chat up the new Now Network.

Vice president of Google Wallet and Payments, Osama Bedier, indicated this week that Sprint Nextel plans to expand Google Wallet support across “at least 10 additional phones” this, starting with the LG Viper.  Although Google is still in discussions with other carriers and hardware manufacturers, Sprint looks to be the premier partner for the next-generation commerce solution for the time being.

According to Bedier, there are tens of thousands of transaction terminal with Wallet support being added to the network on a monthly basis and that adoption is highest in convenience stores and fast food restaurants.  As of today there are twenty-two major retail chains set up to handle the NFC payment alternative, including Jamba Juice, American Eagle, OfficeMax and Foot Locker.

Things will certainly get interesting as the year unfolds as Isis comes to market with its NFC payment solution.  With AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile set to offer Isis transaction capability from a number of handset makers, it stands to reason that Google Wallet may be fighting an uphill battle by this time next year.  Will Sprint and Google be able to fend off a barrage of attacks from nearly every other angle?  And really, does it matter to Google in the end?

It’s at this point that I turn my attention to Sprint customers, and give them a thumbs-up, signifying the beginning of celebration. That’s right, you might be getting some Galaxy Nexus love as well, according to a leaked shipping list. The list has one single item on it: a poster advertising the “Nexus Prime,” which we all know as the Galaxy Nexus. Now, we have to stress that this isn’t concrete, and it could just be something fabricated, so we advise everyone to take it with a grain of salt until more information comes in.

So, what can we infer from this rumor, other than the fact that Sprint apparently uses UPS Ground shipping? Well, if it is indeed true, the Now Network will be getting the Galaxy Nexus in the near future, most likely with some form of 4G connectivity. Keep in mind that Sprint is planning a switch to LTE by 2013, so they may release the device with LTE onboard. Again, this is all smoke and mirrors at the moment, but it’s nice to dream, isn’t it?

So, do we have any Sprint customers out there that are holding off for a possible Galaxy Nexus? Anyone not impressed with the device? Sound off in the comments below!

We’re but one day away from getting the official announcement, but we now have a very clear indication as to how the Sprint version of the Galaxy S II looks.  Assumed to carry the name of Epic 4G Touch when it debuts in the next few weeks, it’s a slim, sleek, and sexy on the outside.  As for the inside, well, we’re still waiting on the details.  We’re really hoping for the same dual-core 1.5GHz processor that’s in the refreshed Galaxy S II so as to keep it on the front-side of the mobile arms race.

It’s nice to see the carriers come together for a good cause every now and then. If you haven’t watched the news lately, Hurricane Irene is set to hit the southeastern part of the States, namely in South and North Carolina, and Virginia. We’ve already learned that T-Mobile is doing their part, as they’ve sent crisis resources and teams to the areas that may be affected. FEMA has also released a preparedness app, and now it appears that Sprint wants to help as well. They’ve deployed teams up and down the eastern seaboard, to prepare for power outages, flooding, and other disasters. As the saying goes, “better safe than sorry.”

So are any of our readers residing in the eastern area? What precautions are you taking for the hurricane? Leave a comment below!
