Have a Nook Color or Nook Tablet and find yourself envying those with more full-blown Android tablets? Take things into your own hands with the latest release from the fellows over at Nook 2 Android. It’s a lesser known fact among its general user base that the devices run Android at their core. Even less apparent to the B&N crowd is that you can make those tablets boot and run a stock Android experience.

Previously limited to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread experience, Nook 2 Android (N2A) microSD cards now allow the aforementioned devices to boot directly to the same Android 4.1 Jelly Bean experience that comes with phones and tablets.  Specifically, this is a Cyanogenmod port of Android, or the preferred stock UI and features that many modders prefer to employ. In a nutshell, these cards turn the e-readers/tablets into Android tablets, complete with widgets and access to Google Play.

If you own one of these two devices and wish to get in on the standard Android love, there are a number of options at your disposal. On one hand you can buy a microSD card already loaded with the bootable OS, with capacities ranging from 8GB ($29.99) up to 64GB ($69.99). On the other hand, you can opt for the $19.99 method which lets you download and install the image on your existing microSD cards. Note that not all cards and capacities may be supported. Whichever route you go, the process of booting to Android 4.1 is not far off!

How does a 7-inch Android 4.0 tablet for under $100 sound to you?  California-based Idolian Mobile has unveiled their new Ice Cream Sandwich-powered tablet which has the distinct honor of coming in with a $98 price tag. Features for the IdolPad PLUS include a 1GHZ CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, microSD expansion, and a 2800mAh battery.  On the surface, these specs are as good as we’d like, if not more.  On the software front, the IdolPad PLUS offers users a full-on Google Play experience and access to hundreds of thousands of apps.

The real test will come in the build quality and whether Idolian Mobile cuts corners and cheapens on plastic and other materials.  It’s worth noting that this guys is missing both Bluetooth and GPS, much like the Kindle Fire. And, as appealing as the total package is, the biggest challenge ahead will be getting the word out.  Look for the IdolPad PLUS on Amazon, Sears, buy.com and other online outlets with shipping that begins today, June 18.

Tablet Innovator Idolian.com Unveils Lowest-Price PC in Its Class: IdolPad PLUS

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Idolian Mobile (www.idolian.com) announces IdolPad PLUS, a new Tablet PC model at a low price of $98. The newest Idolian Tablet PC features the Android 4.0 operating system and a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. At $98, the IdolPad PLUS is the lowest priced 7-inch Android Tablet PC currently available in the market.

The IdolPad PLUS follows Idolian’s highly successful IdolPad priced at $99, which has garnered heavy interest and continues in popularity with a large number of sales since it was released. Customer satisfaction with the product has been positive as well.

IdolPad PLUS offers a capacitive touch screen which has a lower response time and is more sensitive than a resistive touch screen. Also, the capacitive touch screen transmits 90 percent of the light emitted from it which provides a better viewing experience. It also offers a Cortex A8 1 GHz CPU processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB storage. The design is very thin and light with fully functional Android Google Play and Adobe Flash Player. And with its price tag of $98, the IdolPad PLUS is significantly less expensive than competitors, such as the Apple iPad and the Amazon Kindle.

Expecting to generate heavy interest in the product, Jay Kim, founder of Idolian Mobile, states that “The IdolPad PLUS will be available for pre-orders on our website (www.idolian.com) by June 8 and shipping will begin June 18.” Also, it will be available for sale on Amazon, Sears and buy.com as well.

In addition to the IdolPad PLUS, Idolian will introduce TouchTab IPS, IdolPad 10 and TurboTab 10 within the next few weeks. The company also plans to add an action camera/camcorder to its current product offerings.

Currently, Idolian offers 11 different Tablet PC models from its website. Tablet PC accessories and an extended protection plan are also available.

“We believe IdolPad PLUS brings more options to the tablet PC market,” concluded Kim. “Although anyone can appreciate the price point and features, teachers and schools will see IdolPad PLUS as a cost-effective way to bring tablet access into the classroom. Parents will also love giving their children a platform for games and movies without the iPad price tag.”

Android tablets are becoming more common each and everyday but most all of them look and feel the same. There may be a difference of brand quality, but overall the design is always the same. Recently, Sony introduced two new Android tablets, one features a typical tablet design and is known as the Sony Tablet S, but the other one, the Sony Tablet P, sports a completely different look. The device is actually the first ever “foldable” Android powered tablet which features two 5.5-inch dual-touchscreen displays with Sony’s TruBlack technology (also used in Sony’s Bravia TV range).

Unfortunately, having a unique design and a prestigious brand name equals a hefty price tag. Sony launched the 3G version of the Tablet P in the UK where it costs £500 or approx. $750. We’re hoping the price will be different in the US, but unless it drops a few hundred dollars, it’s safe to say this thing will be DOA.

What do you guys think, is the unique design worth the high price tag or is this just another example of a manufacturer who doesn’t get it? Let us know in the comments below.

StumbleUpon has released v2.0 of their Android app, bringing with it a slew of improvements and even adding Android Tablet support into the mix. For those unfamiliar with StumbleUpon, it is a discovery engine that helps users discover interesting content from around the web based on their interests along with the recommendations of friends or other users who share similar interests.

This newest version features a revamped interface for a much cleaner and visually appealing look. Not only have they improved the look but they have also improved how pages load, making “stumbling” faster and even more fun. Another method of “stumbling” has been added in this version. Aside from using the “Stumble!” button, users now have the ability to swipe left or right to “stumble,” making it even easier to explore new content. You’ll also find the new “Explore Box” which was introduced into the web version back in August. Now available on the mobile app, the “Explore Box” allows users to “stumble” through thousands of interests simply by typing a word or phrase. Check out a video of the “Explore Box” below for an idea of how it works:

All of the improvements you see in version 2.0 have also been extended into an Android app compatible with tablets. Android tablets running Honeycomb can now share in the experience of “stumbling” upon new content, allowing for a truly mobile-rich experience.

StumbleUpon for Android is free and available in the Android Market. Hit up the link below and start “stumbling” into the things you love.

Lenovo has just unveiled a new Android-powered tablet at IFA in the form of the IdeaPad A1 (previous coverage). Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and featuring a 7-inch display, it’s a great barrier point for those looking to get a solid, but affordable, Android experience in a tablet. Hardware details for the $199 version include a 1024×600 display, 8GB internal storage, 3-megapixel camera (rear) and front-facing camera, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Unfortunately the A1 will be offered in 8GB overseas but we’ll only see the 16GB ($249) and 32GB ($299) versions here in the United States. Lenovo is the type of brand that could bridge the gap between cheap, knock-off brand tablets and more reputable devices. According to Engadget, the tablet is not likely to receive Honeycomb, a bit of a downer if you ask us. Look for the IdeaPad A1 in pink, white, black, or blue when it streets later this year.

Toshiba is expected to unveil a new Android-powered tablet this week at IFA, according to a number of recent reports. NoteBookItalia uncovered (translate) a pair of images of the Honeycomb tablet although they were not able to pull any specifications. Looking at the pictures we can surmise a much sexier brushed metal design and a number of ports that include microSD, microUSB, and microHDMI output.

AndroidPolice was digging around the USPTO website where they discovered a potential name for the tablet, the Excite.  Considering Toshiba has also registered a number of domains related to the term excite, we’re inclined to believe the rumors.

If there was one thing we could say about the Toshiba Thrive it’s that the form factor is likely going to stand in the way of mass adoption.  For all the great stuff going on under the hood, it’s overshadowed by a clunky design.

Fujitsu, known for making lower-end computers and other devices, is apparently ready to throw its hat into the Android tablet game, with the Fujitsu “Arrows Tab,” a rugged Honeycomb tablet. They’ve announced the 10.1-inch device, and it’s set to launch next month on NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese carrier.  The tablet could have HSPA, UMTS, and LTE connectivity, as well as GSM and GPRS capabilities, for roaming and such. The Arrows Tab will also be packing a TI IMAP 4430 1GHz dual-core processor, so it won’t be slow by any means.

The Arrows Tab will reportedly bring 16GB of storage (we suspect there will be both 16GB and 32GB versions, as with most Honeycomb tablets these days), along with two CMOS cameras, and the entire device will be waterproof. It’s not clear what depths the Arrows Tab will be able to withstand, but we’ll do some digging. Also worth noting is the themed Honeycomb that we see in the photo above, leading us to believe that Fujitsu will be having a bit of fun with a new UI.

No word on exactly when the tablet will hit Japan, or how much it’ll cost. As far as we know, it’s a Japan exclusive for now, but Fujitsu may decide to expand to other countries later. More on this as it develops. So, do we have any readers in Japan that are planning to pick one of these rugged beasts up in September? Sound off in the comments below!
