Toshiba promised it’d be here in the 4th quarter for 399 Euros, and sure enough, here it is.  The Folio 100 is notable due to how much power it holds: an Nevidia Tegra 2 processor, 16GB of on-board storage, mini HDMI, USB 2.0, a front-facing camera, 7 hours of battery life, a WSVGA 10.1-inch screen, WiFi N, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and a lot more. No word on where you can get these, exactly, but call around to your favorite European shoppes to see if any of them will be stocking it soon. [via The Unwired]

While Phandroid wasn’t able to make an appearance at IFA and personally shmooze with device manufacturer’s as we fondled their goods, plenty of pals from around the Android community made their way to Berlin for the event and did a bang-up job of covering the many releases. Tablets seemed to be the hot topic at the event, specifically those running Android. Two slabs announced were the Toshiba Folio 100 and the Huawei Ideos S7, both of which seem to be getting shaky verdicts on the overall presentation of Android.

First up, the device with arguably less potential is the Huawei S7. SlashGear was on hand to take a spin with the thing, and took away an impression that the device may have been a stand-out tablet had it been released earlier in the year, but in the face of future tablets it probably doesn’t stack up.

And one of the tablets that will create a bit of a harder time for the S7 would be the Toshiba Folio 100, which boasts the sort of specs that could make you drool, though initial feedback has seen a version of Android not quite optimized or the 10.1-inch widescreen display. There is hope that may change as release draws near however. The tablet runs on the bigger side and lacks the portability of something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. You can check out Android Central’s full preview for more info on that.

And finally we will bring it back to Huawei for impressions of their entry-level Ideos handset also announced yesterday. This one provides a cheap and dirty pathway to Android 2.2 with surprsingly decent internals including a 2.8-inch QVGA display. 3.2MP camera, and the ability to act as a mobile hotspot. It should go for right around $150 off contract when it launches to numerous markets around the globe.

Bonus: Hands-on action with the recently announced line of ARCHOS Android tablets.

 Toshiba Folio 100

We took a gander at Toshiba’s Folio 100 today and here’s the main takeaway: sucker be huge. It has a 10.1" screen and a fairly reasonable bezel around it – though the resolution on that screen is still only 1024×600, same as the 7" Galaxy Tab. The whole thing is hard plastic with a small texture to the back and felt fine despite being what we suspect is still pre-production hardware. It weighs in at 1.7 pounds and is carry-able, sure, but it’s such a large, wide screen that this is pretty much a sit-down device only. The battery died on us pretty quickly – at 1020mAh it’s probably difficult to get through an entire day of IFA fondling. Toshiba claims 7 hours of battery life.

The HDMI-out and USB-host (yay!) ports are hidden underneath a port cover. There’s 16gigs on board and it’s expandable via a standard, large SD card slot. Combine that full-sized SD card slot, the USB Host port, and the HDMI-out and we’re thinking this is a business-focused device that has aspirations of being a professional photographer’s bestest friend ever.

We were looking at at build of Android 2.2 that didn’t look quite optimized for the big screen and definitely isn’t final build ("TOSHIBA_FOLIO_AND_A 2.2 3.0004 for IFA test-keys" is a pretty good hint there), but we did find it to be responsive and quick – for the most part. There was the occasional lag and jaggy transition, due to that early build moreso than the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, which should be the definition of fast. We would definitely like to see the final build on this – we bet that the included Opera Mobile browser will simply fly.

$540 in "late October" for the WiFi only version is what they quoted us in the booth, with the 3G version coming next year. Catch more photos after the break!

Samsung isn’t the only company announcing Android tablets today.  Toshiba just dropped the Android 2.2-powered Folio 100 on the world.  The specs read like a strong device, with its 1024 x 600 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, Tegra 2 processor, and 16GB of built-in memory.  Other features, like the HDMI output, SD card slot, WiFi support, and 1.3 megapixel webcam would have you thinking this will be a force to be reckoned with. Sadly, that’s not the vibe we’re getting out of the early reports. We’re gathering more of a mixed vibe with a lean towards the positive.

Engadget says the Folio 100 is “less than the sum of its parts” and could redeem itself with a low price point.  At € 399 ($511 US) for the WiFi only tablet will have a hard time competing against the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Meanwhile, Slashgear seemed to enjoy their time with the device today, wishing that it would find its way to the United States.  Gizmodo was disappointed by the battery life, but did point out the three standards of webcam,  mini HDMI port, and USB 2.0 which are noticeably absent from the iPad.
