All your smartphone are belong to us! Apparently no one is using their smartphone to be productive, they just want to play games!

According to Nielsen research, games continue to be the most popular app category while productivity apps find themselves on the lower rungs of the ladder. This of course doesn’t surprise me one bit, what does surprise me is the fact that 93% of the people downloading games are actually willing to pay for them! Hear that developers? You’re more likely to get paid off of games vs. any other category. Chop, chop, start churning out those games!

iOS gamers still hold a commanding lead logging around 14.7 hours of gameplay each month while Android users trail behind with around 9.3 hours of gameplay each month. With faster chipsets, gaming-centric devices and increasing game development I see these numbers skyrocketing within the next 2 years. Now if only the battery companies would get with it so I don’t have to stay tethered to my wall while playing games on my mobile.

What do you say? Do you find yourself downloading/playing mostly games or do you actually use your phone to be more productive? Check out the pretty little charts below then feel free to sound off in the comments or on our Facebook Wall. Game On!

Amazon Cloud Player, Google Music, Slacker Radio, Rdio, and a host of other similar services are set to face serious competition in the United States as Spotify preps for landing. After years of hopes and high expectations, Spotify’s website is now taking email addresses for invitations. Promising “any track, any time, anywhere” and for “free” we’re not totally sure what lies ahead for US fans although we figure it won’t be all that different from other parts of the world. If so, look for $10 per month for Premium access and unlimited streaming across your Android (and other, less cool) devices. As far as the “free” stuff goes, we would expect limited playback hours, advertisements, and lower audio quality.

US Cellular

Regional carrier US Cellular has hardly been slacking in the Android department, recently adding the likes of the venerable HTC Merge to its stable. And it’s just getting started. In a news release, USCC announced its intentions to launch seven more Android smartphones by the end of the year. Of those seven phones, one will include its first 4G device, expected in November.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • HTC will have three Android devices on USCC — two smartphones, and a 7-inch tablet, presumably, the Flyer.
  • Motorola’s bringing a 4.3-inch device with a dual-core 1GHz processor and world phone capabilities.
  • And LG is said to be bringing "one of the slimmest and lightest smartphones," with a 1GHz processor, 4-inch touchscreen and "ultra-bright LCD display that is easy to view in sunlight." Sounds like the Optimus Black to us.
  • In addition, there will be entry-level phones from Samsung and Huawei.

So that makes seven phones, folks — and while they might not be top-of-the-line at the end of the year, they certainly don’t sound like anything to scoff at.

HTC has bumped up the speed of their ChaCha “Facebook Phone” up to 800MHz ahead of its eventual US debut.  Announced back in February at Mobile World Congress, the unique handset was initially listed with a 600MHz processor.  While Android enthusiasts and high end users might turn their nose at an 800MHz processor, we can’t imagine the typical demographic even caring.  As much as it might pain you to admit it, not everyone needs a dual-core beast.

The ChaCha is expected to come to the United States as part of an exclusive deal with AT&T.  The exact date and pricing has yet to be determined.

It’s the start of a new month which means it’s time for more surveys, reports, and findings to start rolling in.  Among the first this month comes the comScore MobiLens report which looks at the US mobile scene.  Their findings indicate that Android has grown 5.2 percentage points over the previous quarter and now command a 36.4 percent market share.  Apple comes in second at 26.0 percent, up ever so slightly with a 1.2 percent gain.

So if two are up, then surely someone must be down, right?  Yes, in fact, there are three players losing market share over the last three months. RIM suffers the most here, down 4.7 percent quarter over quarter, and now have 25.7 percent  of the pie. Microsoft comes in fourth with 6.7 percent share, down 1.3 percent and Palm (WebOS) is down .6 percent and has a lowly 2.6 percent market share.

Hit the press release to see which OEMS are faring the best in the US and to find out how people are using their smart phones.  Are you a typical user?
