Sony today announced their next Android smartphone, the Xperia Sola, a 3.7-inch slab of sexy headed for international markets over the second quarter of this year.  Formerly known by its code name of ‘Pepper‘, the Android 2.3 handset features a 1GHz dual-core processor, NFC, Sony Bravia engine, and Video and Music Unlimited service.  If you’re turned off by the lack of Ice Cream Sandwich, you’ll be happy to learn that it’s due in the summer months.

Speaking specifically about the screen, Sony calls the technology behind the Reality Display “floating touch”.  What does it do?  Oh, nothing really… other than it’s able to recognize when a finger is hover above! This will be helpful in web browsing as it allows one to use their finger in a cursor-like capacity.  We can imagine that, once given to developers, that this could make for engaging games and applications.

Making its smartphone debut exclusively on Xperia sola, Sony’s unique floating touch lets consumers navigate the web by hovering their finger above the screen so it acts like a moving cursor, without actually having to touch the screen.  Once the desired link is found it can be highlighted and a simple tap will load the page.  Floating touch will evolve with new user functionality and applications through software updates and engagement with developers.

The guys over at AndroidNext.de were able to spend some time with the Xperia Sola and were too kind to share their impressions.

Qualcomm today announced that four new titles are joining their Snapdragon GamePack.  Designed as a bundle of games optimized for the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset, the collection has grown to more than 100 titles.  The latest games to see their name added to the list are The Reem, Reign of Amira, The Ball, and Virtua Tennis Challenge.

It’s worth pointing out that today’s news is more of an announcement than a rollout as none of them are actually available in the Snapdragon GamePack. Also, the GamePack is currently only available to users in North America, however plans are in place to expand across the globe.

  • The Reem” – a mixed martial arts (MMA) game from Khaeon Gamestudio featuring three-time UFC champion Alistair “The Reem” Overeem. “The Reem” will be released in early April exclusively on Snapdragon devices for a year.
  • “Reign of Amira” – a game designed and developed by Qualcomm’s in-house gaming studio, where Princess Amira battles her enemies to retain the lost glory of the Desert Kingdom.  The game willbe exclusive to Snapdragon devices running on Android and will be available to users for free later this year.
  • “The Ball” – a highly anticipated game from Tripwire Interactive, which will be released in March 2012.  ”The Ball” features Snapdragon’s integrated Adreno GPU with high-resolution visuals and will be first available to Snapdragon devices running on Android for six months.
  • “Virtua Tennis Challenge”™ – the first mobile version of this popular console game from gaming pioneer SEGA®.  The game will be available in March 2012 and is optimized on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor for the Xperia Play and features some of the next-generation sports play and graphics.

In the tech race, it’s generally numbers that the various manufacturers strive for. Whether it be more megapixels or a wider screen, the general rule is the bigger, the better. Now we have quad-cores on the horizon, and Sony isn’t convinced, at least according to Stephen Sneeden, product marketing manager for Sony Mobile.

In a conversation with CNET Asia at MWC, Sneeden had this to say about quad-core processors:

We’re going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the  battery efficiency. Because right now we don’t feel that is there.  What we are going to be doing in the second half of the year is moving to the  Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core  architecture.

He continued with, “You’ll see in 2013, as we’re evaluating the quad-core performance where it  makes sense, where you’re not suffering in quality and the performance truly is  there, and there really is something that demanding applications need. That’s when we make the right move to quad-core.” It’s good to see Sony not playing the numbers game, and instead focusing on a quality product. Kudos to them.

So do you agree with Sony’s decision? Let us know in the comments!

Much hoopla has been made over the magical synergistic qualities of NFC, from payment options to data transfer on Google’s Android 4.0 ICS. ZigBee might be new to most people, but it’s basically a much more advanced and efficient wireless network than anything currently in place, using a whole lot less battery than the traditionally used WiFi. TazTag, a French wireless tech manufacturer, has announced that they are going to be unveiling the TPH-ONE, the very first phone to have both of these technologies built in.

The company hopes that the new device will be an example of the capabilities of both NFC and ZigBee. The TPH-ONE will be available in March for demos, and is available now for pre-order with a set delivery for April.

With that being said, is anyone interested in the TazTag? Where do you see NFC going in the future? Drop a comment below! The full press release can be found after the break.

SwiftKey is in Barcelona this week, chatting up their uber-smart keyboard alternative with handset and tablet makers.  To take things even further, the guys have announced that they are now allowing smartphone and other device makers the opportunity to utilize their technology by way of an SDK.  Should a manufacturer want to use the software development kit, they’ll be tapping into the stuff that makes SwiftKey X one of our favorite keyboard options.  This means support for more than 40 languages, leading-edge word prediction and correction, and a friendly UI for typing.

We’ve seen other keyboard options come pre-loaded on smartphones and tablets, but how would you feel about SwiftKey technology on your next Android?

SwiftKey launches SDK for handset and device manufacturers

OEMs can integrate SwiftKey’s powerful language technology into their devices to improve core typing experience

27 February, 2012; Barcelona, Spain – SwiftKey™ (http://www.swiftkey.net), the company behind the award-winning SwiftKey X keyboard for Android™ smartphones, is making the core language-engine technology that powers its app available to OEMs. The move will allow handset and device manufacturers to embed SwiftKey’s smart language technology into their own devices through a Software Development Kit (SDK).

SwiftKey X has already proven immensely popular as a stand-alone app. It has been downloaded over five million times, making it one of the most popular paid for applications on the planet in its category. In addition, SwiftKey’s technology has been shortlisted for the Most Innovative App in this year’s GSMA Global Mobile Awards at Mobile World Congress.

The SDK enables tablet and handset manufacturers to offer cutting edge prediction and correction technology in their products, powered by SwiftKey’s Natural Language Processing language engine. OEMs can build SwiftKey’s core technology into their own keyboard and UI, to improve the core user experience of their devices. The SDK introduces a range of new features in addition to those currently available on SwiftKey X, with support for over 40 languages, including Arabic, Korean and Spanish.

Dr Ben Medlock, CTO of SwiftKey explains: “As we are interacting with more devices, technology that accurately understands what a user is trying to say or do with their devices is vital. It only takes a cursory look at user groups to realise that typing is one of the biggest frustrations that people have on tablets and smartphones. The launch of our SDK will give OEMs access to better typing experience, with their own look and feel.”

“The SDK will also enable other consumer technology devices, beyond the tablet and smartphone, to receive the benefits of our unique language engine. We have already seen interesting applications of our language engine in Smart TVs and assistive technology devices.”

SwiftKey SDK supports the following platforms and languages:

  • Android
  • C++
  • iOS
  • JVM (Java, Scala)
  • Linux
  • Mac OS X
  • .NET (C#, VB)
  • QNX/BlackBerry 10
  • WebOS
  • Windows

In the era of data caps, throttling, and falsely advertised “unlimited” data plans, quite a few users have to keep track of their monthly data usage. ICS has a nice data usage chart, along with a few alert options, to help with this. But in reality, the average user doesn’t know the difference in 20MB and 200MB when it comes to mobile data. Just how many web pages can a user load with x amount of data usage? Onavo aims to help with this, as they’ve just introduced Onavo Extend, an app exclusively made for ICS devices, both smartphone and tablet alike.

Onavo Extend builds on Onavo’s existing data usage monitor, adding a few spiffy new features, like the utilization of Google’s WebP image format, which creates massive data savings on images, without sacrificing the quality of those images. Users can navigate between the last week and the last month of data usage, to see how everything is broken down.

While it’s exclusive to Ice Cream Sandwich, the app itself does have a very sleek look to it. So without further ado, ICS users can download Onavo Extend for free from the Android Market by using the box below. Not on the latest version of Android? You can still try out Onavo’s Data Usage Monitor app.

How do you track your data usage? Do you worry about going over every month, and being throttled or charged overage fees? Let us know in the comments!

A new report out of DigiTimes advises that we’re going to see Android 5.0 Jellybean launch in but a few short months.  According to their sources, OEMs are not happy with the adoption of Android 4.0 and will debut a tablet-oriented 5.0  operating system.  Yeah, why don’t we wait a few months before we start talking like that, huh?

Given that 4.0 is barely even out, we cannot help but consider this a bunch of “lost in translation” stuff.  What’s more, it would be very silly to go back to forking Android after just one unified release. Even more strange here is that 5.0 is said to allow for dual-booting of operating systems, pairing with, say,Windows 8 on a tablet.   Android has already been used in similar capacity as other OEMs have adopted a dual-boot system for select devices.

Android 5.0 will be further optimized for tablet PCs, while Google will also integrate its Chrome system functions to push dual-operating system designs. Brand vendors can either choose to adopt only Android 5.0 or add Android 5.0 to Windows 8 devices with the ability to switch between the two OSes without the need to shut down the computer.

If we were to venture a guess we would say that we may “see” Jelly Bean at Google IO but not roll it out for a few more months.  It would not surprise us to learn that whatever “J” build they go with also keeps a 4.x release.  Think in terms of Donut, Eclair, Froyo, and Gingerbread and all the 2.X and you’ll see what we mean.

Keep in mind that while DigiTimes has been known to get a rumor or two correct, they’ve been way off the mark, too.

The company OnLive today announced that their latest update to the OnLive Android app would take their gaming experience on the Xperia Play to the next level. How? By enabling the slide-out controls that make the device so unique, that’s how. That’s right, folks. We’re talking dedicated gaming buttons, joysticks, and shoulder buttons galore. According to Steve Perlman, the Founder and CEO of OnLive:

“From the moment we launched our OnLive Android app, gamers began asking about Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY game control support. We listened and delivered. Now Xperia PLAY gamers in the US and UK can play almost all of OnLive’s 200 premium titles—including hit AAA games like Saints Row: The Third and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations—on their Xperia PLAY smartphone with a full console-class experience, including multiplayer and social features.”

So be sure to check out the app in the Android Market, and if you’ve got an Xperia Play, let us know what you think! Hit up the break for the full press release.

Palo Alto, CA – December 22, 2011 – OnLive, Inc., the pioneer of cloud gaming, today announced that its free OnLive app for Android has been updated to support the slide-out game controls on the Sony Ericsson Xperia™ PLAY smartphone*, enabling gameplay of almost all OnLive games, including the latest AAA console-class titles. The Xperia PLAY combines Android smartphone touchscreen control with what every console gamers dreams of: slide-out dedicated gaming keys, analog touch joysticks and shoulder buttons. The just-updated free OnLive Android App delivers the missing piece: AAA high-performance console-class games playable directly with the slide-out controls, streamed over the Internet for instant on-demand play.

“From the moment we launched our OnLive Android app, gamers began asking about Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY game control support,” said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO. “We listened and delivered.

Released to the Android Market on December 8, the free OnLive app is the first cloud gaming app to enable users to play high-performance, console-quality games—previously playable only on the highest-end computers and gaming systems—on devices as simple as smartphones and tablets. Unlike downloaded games, OnLive games are streamed over the internet just like streaming music and video, never taking up storage. And OnLive games are cross-platform—meaning you can start play on your PC or Mac®, then pick up your game on your smartphone and finish on a friend’s TV via the OnLive Game System with all your save game data intact. Or, play multiplayer with friends on entirely different devices. Now, with Xperia PLAY, gamers will be able to extend OnLive’s high-performance game touch experience with the greater control, better accuracy and the physical feeling of a game console controller, all in a single compact smartphone. Customers can find the OnLive app in the Android Market by following this link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.onlive.client.

Tablet and smartphone owners who don’t own an Xperia PLAY can choose two other ways to play on an Android tablet or smartphone. They can jump instantly into free demos of 24 touch-playable games, such as Dirt 3 and Defense Grid Gold, which have been either redesigned with native touch controls or include various virtual gamepads on-screen. Or, they can play nearly every game in OnLive’s growing library using the recently released and highly-acclaimed Universal OnLive Wireless Controller, designed to optimize wireless play across tablets, smartphones, PCs, Macs, TVs and Blu-ray players.

For more information on the OnLive app and the Universal OnLive Wireless Controller, visit www.onlive.com or www.onlive.co.uk.
