If you’re rocking any Sony Xperia phone from last year and you’re wondering where your ice cream sandwich love is, Sony would like to ease your concerns. In a recent blog post,  one of the software developers stated that the company is right on schedule for its ICS rollout. While there were no specific dates mentioned, for products the blog did list a site where a list of available software kits is available. Interestingly enough, in order to install the update, you’ll need to download the installer to your computer, plug in your device, and push the software manually.

Has anyone already gotten their Ice Cream Sandwich? How are you liking it? Let us know in the comments below!

Evernote has been the popular note-taking option in the electronic medium for some time, offering apps on multiple platforms and seamless syncing between them all, and plenty of other features to boot. Things like picture, audio, and web link integration make it a handy catch all for all of the various tidbits of information one would like to keep handy.

Evernote has enhanced its Android experience even more, with speech-to-text integration for notes (for ICS runners and “some other devices”), and better widget options (available as a separate download) including “Quick Snapshot.” This opens up the camera and the picture snapped is automatically added to your Evernote files, cutting out several steps that were required before. All in all, not a bad update to an already exceptional note system.

If you haven’t updated to the latest Evernote version on your Android device, you can do so by clicking on the Play Store link below. With that being said, we want to know if you use an app for notes. If so, which one? Let us know in the comments!

For Toshiba’s next tablet, the company is going back to the same well that brought us the original Thrive.  The hardware maker recently introduced its new 7-inch LT170, with a seemingly identical form factor as their initial Android effort. Specifications include a 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, 8GB internal storage, and MicroSD and MicroUSB ports.

Priced at €299 ($400 US) this will have a hard time selling against a $200 Kindle Fire or Archos G9 Turbo series. Considering the rumored $150 Nexus Tablet could be a few months away we are not optimistic about the Toshiba LT170’s chances. There’s no indication yet as to if, or when, this tablet will come to the United States, however we would expect a separate announcement.

I remember when Swype was the biggest thing to hit the market. Everyone was so used to simple single-letter typing that the concept blew us all away at first. Swype was a closed beta for awhile, and everyone scrambled to sign up for it. Even when it was released to the public, Swype was a fairly big commodity. Personally, I was excited as well. At the time, I had never heard of such a concept, and I couldn’t wait to try it out. I was lucky enough to be a part of the closed beta, and I couldn’t put my trusty G1 down when I finally got that precious APK  file installed.

Swype brought new life to touchscreen typing for me, even if it was full of bugs. I didn’t care. Most first releases are rough drafts, and it was called a “beta” group for a reason. I was never truly appeased with the accuracy of Swype, and I used it on and off for the next year or so before eventually fell out of love with it. I jumped from keyboard to keyboard, never truly satisfied. I found some solace with Thumb Keyboard, but I knew I would never be able to type as quickly as I did with Swype.

Then, something happened that I now consider to be fate: I had the chance to review the Droid Razr Maxx. After powering up the device for the first time, and going through the setup process, I was curious about what input methods Motorola had given users. So, I jumped into a text box, and after a good old fashioned long press, and a quick tap of Input Methods, there she sat. My old flame, you could say.

In my review, I mentioned that I was never a huge fan of Swype (which is partially true), so I used the Motorola keyboard instead. After being contacted by a Swype rep, I had a sudden “what the hell?” moment, and downloaded the Swype installer for my G2X. It’d been a little over a year since I’d used the keyboard, so there must have been some changes to improve it, right? I started using Swype as my daily input method, and I have to admit, it brought back a few memories.

Was I impressed? With a technology like this, it’s hard not to be. I wasn’t blown away by the slight improvements that Swype had seen since our last encounter, but I was pleased. I used Swype for the next week, and didn’t have to switch to a normal keyboard once. Accuracy seemed much improved, and I even went to the trouble of adjusting the settings, so that accuracy got more attention than speed.

I noticed that virtually nothing has changed in terms of appearance for Swype, but that familiar draw-to-type motion is still as smooth as the day I first installed it those many moons ago. After just over a week of usage, I can firmly say that Swype and I have made up, and I’ll be using it as my daily input method for some time to come. I’m quite satisfied with the accuracy, and I’m definitely typing more quickly.

It’s as if I’m back in early 2011, the last time that I used Swype. But this time, it’s better. This time, I’m not jumping to another keyboard. This time, Swype is here to stay.

My week with Swype: the end of my search for the perfect keyboard originally appeared on AndroidGuys.

With all the rumors about the next flagship member of Samsung’s popular Galaxy line, the lines between reality and fantasy, at times, become blurred as our desire for something bigger, faster, and more powerful outweighs any thought of overall practicality. But according to Eldar Murtazin, the design is finalized, and EVERY carrier wants as many as they can get their hands on. His tweet, shown below, is evidence to that.

Other news of the SIII from Murtazin puts the device in a league all its own, being the first phone to sport a quad-core processor, at only 7 mm thin, with a 4.8-inch HD display. But above all else, the two most exciting aspects of this machine are as follows:

First, the Galaxy line will be stepping up from the cheapy plastic ways of the past, as Sammy will build the third with a ceramic chassis. Second, Eldar has confirmed that we can expect the release by this June. Of course, Eldar is only one man, and we’ve heard no word from Samsung on if any of this is credible, so we’ll just have to sit here and twiddle our thumbs until we hear some concrete information.

That notwithstanding, is anyone else as excited as I am? Drop a comment below!

Today is a monumental day for  Android developers as Google announced a pretty tasty treat last night.  Google has increased application size limits to 4GB each, up considerably from 50MB.  That’s not to say that the actual size of an APK has been increased, it still stays capped at 50MB.

Should a developer need some hosting for their application, Google will handle that as well, bundling  two additional 2GB expansion files in the process.  These additional files would be automatically downloaded from the Android Market and the 15-minute refund window will wait until everything is installed.

For older devices, developers can  use a Google-supplied library to manage the download. If you are a developer or just looking for more info, then check out the source below.

Well, what do you think about this great move by Google? Tell us in the comment box below.

Later this year, Verizon will be offering family data plans, which should help heavy data users by bringing multiple caps under one umbrella. Of course, this also has the potential to screw some people out of data usage, depending on how they implement it. We shall simply have to see. At an investor conference, Verizon CTO Fran Shammo spoke of the plans and Verizon’s extensive research into the data plans, and their approach in handling them. Shammo stated that

(it’s) a very complex equation because we have to make sure that it’s good for Verizon and it’s also good for our customer. It’s important to realize that the day we launch this account billing, everybody won’t be migrating to the account billing day one. This is going to be a long-term migration into where we want to get data plan sharing, but this will be more of a 4G play.

Given that it’s a focus on 4G, there’s a possibility that some sort of LTE inclusion will be mandatory, but of course we’ll have to wait and see. Hopefully this will be beneficial to everyone, and not a shady ploy to make more money by shivving their customers.

So, Verizon customers, sound off! What do you think about this development? Positive or negative? Let us know in the comments!

In the tech race, it’s generally numbers that the various manufacturers strive for. Whether it be more megapixels or a wider screen, the general rule is the bigger, the better. Now we have quad-cores on the horizon, and Sony isn’t convinced, at least according to Stephen Sneeden, product marketing manager for Sony Mobile.

In a conversation with CNET Asia at MWC, Sneeden had this to say about quad-core processors:

We’re going to join quad-core when we feel that the performance matches the  battery efficiency. Because right now we don’t feel that is there.  What we are going to be doing in the second half of the year is moving to the  Cortex A15 architecture, which we feel outperforms the current quad-core  architecture.

He continued with, “You’ll see in 2013, as we’re evaluating the quad-core performance where it  makes sense, where you’re not suffering in quality and the performance truly is  there, and there really is something that demanding applications need. That’s when we make the right move to quad-core.” It’s good to see Sony not playing the numbers game, and instead focusing on a quality product. Kudos to them.

So do you agree with Sony’s decision? Let us know in the comments!

Libelium designs and manufactures hardware technology for the implementation of wireless sensor networks so that system integrators, engineering and consultancy companies can implement reliable Smart Cities solutions to end users within the minimun time to market. They recently announced the launch of their latest radio module that brings an extra layer of intelligence, which can be used to communicate with any nearby Android device.

This Wifi radio extends the possibilities of The Internet of Things to iPhone/Android apps developers as it completes the current connectivity possibilities – already covered by ZigBee, Bluetooth and 3G/GPRS –, allowing for the first time direct communications between the sensors and the smartphones even without an intermediate router.

Libelium’s new Wifi sensors enable system integrators to create easily intelligent monitoring systems for the urban environment. Libelium’s CTO David Gascón says, “Now sensor nodes can connect directly to Cloud servers using a standard protocol such asHTTP”. He adds, ”This is a milestone in order to ensure a quick spread of Internet of Things applications since sensor devices may connect  automatically to the existing Wifi networks deployed in cities or even to  our own home routers making new deployments an easy task”.
